We just got a letter inviting us to attend an informal event at a current local students home. This is just a couple days after the local "Tulane Comes to You" event at a local hotel. Wondering if we should attend both. Has anyone gone to both in your area? Are they repetitive? Thanks

This one is new to me. I cannot recall hearing about an event like this or seeing anyone post about it. Sounds like the chance for something more informal. Let us know what else you find out.

where do you live npcx? Is this a formal Tulane event, or informally organized by the local student? (If so, how would they get your contact info?) We are in NJ and have not been invited to such an event :(

jozuko: We have never had an event like that in our area either. I am guessing it is just one of the current Tulane families welcoming the new students in their area, and not another Tulane sponsored event.

We did have an event like this in our area. It was an official Tulane Comes To You event but was very small so it was in someone’s home. It was actually very nice. It was just the rep and admitted students. She had very useful information but it was very informal so a lot of time for questions. I don’t understand why they would have that AND a reception in a hotel. Are you in an area that it was difficult to get to the hotel? Maybe they are trying to reach a different geographic location and you are borderline so were invited to both? (Just a guess)

Thanks for the feedback. We are in Northern California. The “home” event is definitely school sponsored (invite is on letter head and from the admission counselor). The reason I asked is we have a bit of a conflict with the Tulane Comes to You hotel event. We can make it but it means cancelling out of another commitment. We already RSVP’d for the hotel event, which I’ve read mixed reviews about, but the home event sounds perfect.

npcx. I would choose the home event if I were you. We went to an admitted students event in NJ a few days ago. The adcom showed a video, spoke and then one current student, a few parents and alumni spoke and answered questions. Personally, I think that it would have been better if it was a little more informal, with time for the kids to mix and mingle. The video did not add any info that I did not already know (granted, we have visited the school in person, and I am a CC junkie!) and what I learned from the speakers was 1- The health center is very good, and you can get Tulane insurance or just use your parent’s insurance and 2- There are direct flights from a local airport (in Trenton NJ) on Frontier Airlines (never heard of it) to NOLA, but only on Mondays and Fridays (how weird is that?) for only $89!
The most important thing is to get your kid psyched about Tulane and meet area kids (and parents!) Have fun!

i wish we were invited to the home event. we are also from northern cal. do you think it is a good idea to call the admission counselor and see if we could attend it? i know who she is. we are unable to attend the Tulane Comes to You Hotel event.

myboby - Absolutely call and see if there is room. They may have used some kind of assumption about distance from the home to decide who to send invitations to. Maybe you fell outside that radius, but I bet you would be welcome as long as there are not too many already for the home to comfortably accommodate.

jozuko - I used to fly into Denver a few times a year and Frontier is big there and throughout the Rocky Mountain states. I seem to remember they got bought by someone, but I cannot remember who. I don’t think it was one of the majors. Anyway, it kind of does make sense to have Friday and Monday flights, given New Orleans prominence as a convention city. A lot of conventions start on Monday afternoons so people can fly in Monday mornings, and of course they have to get home as well. The bonus is it also allows for weekend vacations in New Orleans for a cheap fare. Very handy for you, that’s for sure!
