My D wants to attend next accepted students day on April 11. did anyone here attend the one in March? feedback
its a little expensive for us to all fly down for a weekend, take day off from work, etc - want to be sure we get a lot out of it. She has several great college choices and USC is one
good tours of Honors college and dorm? chance to meet professors and students?
We attended the admitted students day last weekend.
There was a tour of the HC with an opportunity to see common areas as well as a few room examples. (Quite impressive by the way!) There were also opportunities to see other dorm types.
There were plenty of opportunities to meet students. Sign up for the HC social the night before. You’ll meet students that could be roommates.
We attended presentations for the business school and HC. There was no opportunity to talk directly with faculty. However, the presentations were well done. Both included a brief Q&A session. The HC presentation was handled by the Dean. Several people spoke for the business school, including a dean.
Learned that HC will admit about 430 students this fall out of about 5,000 total freshman. If the HC were a separate university, the metrics for its students would be on par with Cornell and other top universities. Also, learning about how immersive the HC experience is helpful as well.
If you haven’t decided on USC I’d definitely attend. It sealed the deal for us. We were quite impressed.
We were also looking to go down to the Accepted Students Day on April 11 but flights are ridiculous that weekend, even going into Charlotte. Unfortunately the weekend coincides with the beginning of April vacation for most schools in the northeast and in turn airlines jack up their prices.
My son saw the school last April so he has at least seen the campus. He is also 80% sure that he will attend SC next August.
My sister just took her son down for a second time during the March weekend and was raving about how good the school did with all of the presentations. She seamed to think that is was much more personable than the Open House that they went to last year. She made a point that if my son was on the fence that we should definitely attend. One thing that she did recommend was to get out to areas of Columbia outside of campus (something we didn’t do last year). She was impressed with the Vista area northwest of campus.
Last year we visited for “accepted students tour” on day OTHER than the Accepted Students Day. You should see that option on this page: http://www.sc.edu/visit/schedule_a_visit/ (schedule 2 weeks prior)
I think it’s just somewhat expanded over the basic tours, but might be worth considering for some. Should be less crowded than the big day events, at any rate. Our son chose to attend from out-of-state after tour.
Agree with CurlSnout that a tour at another time would be fine. We couldn’t make the two special tour days so we visited last month. Arrived late Thursday afternoon after driving through a snowstorm. Had a nice dinner in the Vista, walked around the west side of campus.
Friday started with a business school presentation at 9, unofficial tour of the fitness center after (D stopped at the desk, said she was a prospective student, and they signed us in and let us wander), followed by 10:30 Admissions presentation (brief) and campus tour (for accepted students only, it was more comprehensive than the general one we had a year ago) that took about 2 hours. The tour included the Honors Dorm but we had also strolled in there the day before and checked out the dining facilities, ground floor classrooms, etc.
Attended another academic presentation at 1, then an Honors College presentation at 2. We had arranged everything on line, starting with a date and tour time and then adding the individual departments she wanted to see. I don’t know if every department has tours/presentation every day, but you could check. There were no social events so no opportunity to meet other students, but it was a full and very rewarding day even without that.
The Masters golf tournament in Augusta is Apr 9-12. – that is one reason the flights are so expensive. Golf fanatics will stay in Columbia and drive down to event.
