This forum has been quiet, anyone out there?

Is anyone planning to spend a beautiful Spring weekend in Canton for Accepted Students Weekend?

I have to say SLU knows how to court a potential student. We have received a personal call from President Sullivan, attended a wonderful reception locally for accepted students and enjoyed a steady stream of information.

Any potential history majors?

Hehe...I'm a sophomore here at SLU and used to frequent CC back in my high school days. I just thought I'd return and what was going on in the SLU forum!

SLU is awesome this time of year...it just hit 65 degrees today with not a cloud in the sky!

If anyone has any questions I could answer, I'd be happy to answer them :)

Hi Comfortably Numb-----In your opinion, how well does the freshman advisor/seminar program work for helping a student feel better prepared . This is a new concept to me, does it work?

Do you have much experience with the profs in the History Dept?

What have been the highlights of your SLU experience to date? And downers?

For the first question, I assume you're talking about our First-Year Program. I think that the FYP is something that really distinguishes us from other schools- if I remember right, SLU was the first to have this set up. For those who don't know, you actually take one class (a seminar) with other freshman you live with. Your advisor also teaches it. As to whether it made me better prepared- definitely. I think it really helped ease the transition from high school to college. While most of the course is spent talking about the course subject matter, you also learn about where to find certain academic resources, how not to plagiarize, etc. It's definitely helpful for upper level courses. Plus, you form a better relationship with your advisor, because they know you much more than if you were just a face in a crowd.

I don't have much experience with professors in the history dept. I'm actually a bio major. I have several friends that are history majors, and they seem to not have any problems with it. I can tell you that I haven't heard anything bad about them either. ;) Sorry.

Highlights of the SLU experience: Men's Hockey Games (very big up here. We're Division I, so if your son/daughter isn't a hockey fan yet, they will be :) ), Guster concert, trips to Ottawa and Whiteface with friends, Peak Weekend, general hanging out with friends, etc.

Downers: This is going to sound like I'm talking from all that glossy literature they send you, but I can't really think of any. Some argue that there's not a real whole lot to do in the village of Canton itself, but I don't think that's really an issue. When coming to SLU, you have to know that while there are some drawbacks to the location, there are also a lot of benefits.

Hope that helps :)

C-n

Well, we experienced things ourselves this past weekend! Impressive in every sense of the word. Weather, schedule, food, students, facilities, faculty, information/academics .........the list goes on.

You guys have a piece of paradise up there in Canton. I can not believe the extend of what is available to 2,200 students.

The presentation on the FYP was excellent and really helped a parent to understand the program. What did you take?

The beautiful weather made everyone happy! And then Saturday the rain returned, I wonder if things would have looked so incredible.

I took one called 'Coldest Cold War Flicks'...basically it was about the 1950's and 60's, and the environment surrounding the Cold War. But we also watched movies dealing with the times.

Glad you liked SLU!
