My son was just accepted into the summer 2012 session at University Park (Yay). Any input on the summer sessions would be greatly appreciated. When does it start? How does it work? Will he immediately go into the fall session?

Classes start June 27th I believe. But you can show up June 25th. You can do the LEAP program which is more focused on a certain topic and two classes. I think many summer participants participate in this program. There are two weeks between summer and fall session.

My daughter was also accepted into summer. Would love to hear more about the LEAP program.

[Penn State University - Office for Summer Session](http://www.leap.psu.edu/)

LEAP students move in June 25th and start classes the 27th. The best part of LEAP is that you have the same students in both your classes, plus there are activities planned for that same group, plus they (mostly)live together in Pollock (one of the south halls). This is actually the second summer session – the first one starts in May but is not for freshmen. Anyway…session ends August 10, and LEAPrs can store their stuff on campus, go home, and return August25 for the mayhem that is move-in day with much of their stuff already on campus. Your LEAP room and fall '12 room will not be the same room.

You can just take classes and not do leap. I don’t know why anyone would pass LEAP up, it is far and away one of the best programs PSU does.

for the leap program do friends normally sign up to be in the same prove together? i want to do leap but i want to be with all new people.

Are the credits for the courses taken during Summer Leap program transferred? In other words, can you take a lighter course load in the fall?

yes to both! I plan on taking 4 classes (12 credits) instead of the usual 15 for fall.

Looks like the LEAP program is a win-win situation! What are the deadlines for applying to LEAP?

This is not an exact copy of your situation, but I’ll offer that …

I started Grad School in the summer (at Penn State) {somewhat by accident} but it turned out to be a great advantage.

When everyone else arrived in the mayhem of the Fall, I already knew where everything was and was the BMOC. Well, at least big man of the dorm.

Fabercom: LEAP registration begins Feb 25th I believe at 5 PM, it ends when it fills up, I suppose.

Congratulations to everyone accepted to University Park who was hoping to be. My daughter was accepted for summer session. Can anyone on this thread answer these questions for me:

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of how quickly the LEAP prides fill up for summer session? I know that registration begins on February 21 at 5 PM. Just curious if it’s the kind of thing where they fill up within hours, or you have a week or two to decide.

Does anyone have first hand knowledge of how late (i.e. mid-February, late-February, early-March, etc…) a freshman student can wait to accept the offer of admission before they are taking a chance on losing any say in their housing preference?

Thanks for any/all replies.

Dadager - I have the same questions. Hope someone chimes in. We are visiting on 2.29 and she will probably make her decision then or soon after.

Prides fill up fairly quickly – I wouldn’t say within hours, though. Consider that many people are awaiting decisions from other schools in March, so PSU isn’t expecting everyone to have accepted their decision by now. (Although early LEAP registration is a way they leverage you into hurrying up) I would choose your LEAP pride before registration opens up, and then register within the week if you can. Worst case, you end up in one of the speech/english prides (kinda generic) which is still fine. It’s not really about the classes, it’s the experience.

I would accept a housing contract by late March. (We already accepted ours) April is just okay, May is really gambling that you won’t end up in supplemental housing. Again, there’s no real reason to wait, unless you are unsure of accepting PSU’s offer. Most freshmen end up in East, or in South, regardless. South is much closer to town. The “atmosphere” at East is no real advantage in January when there’s a windchill of 10degrees!

Last year we didn’t send in the housing deposit until the second week of April. We waited to hear from the last school mid March and then did one last visit to both. We were worried about my son getting supplemental housing but he got a regular room in East where he wanted to be. Good luck to all
