Can someone tell me about their experiences in the summer leap program at penn state and a little about how it went or how it helped. I have been accepted to penn states summer 2012 leap program.summer sessions. Also if you can list what classes you took and how the classes were. please feel free to write about the activities you did outside of the classroom. I heard you do group movies, go to places, etc with you leap instructor, and just hang out?? And for those of you thinking about doing this program please also write to express any concern, questions, or thoughts..

Also how easy does it make the transition from summer to fall? And what other fun things can you do there...im just worried about doing it because i would hate to give up my last summer with my hs friends and hangning out with them. But i still want to do it.

As with gsundar2383, we are very interested in knowing more about the LEAP program for summer 2012. Hoping that someone with first hand experience can join this thread.

Does the typical student take on the two courses in the chosen pride, or more than two?

It looks like a terrific program, just want to have a reality check from students who have gone through it.

When you are admitted to the summer session, you can take the LEAP program, However you are not forced to take the LEAP program. You can just take any other classes in the summer at psu. But with the LEAP program, you are with more people that are in the same situation as you and it is easier to meet new people bc you are all freshman

From what I have heard: I think most students in the LEAP program take just two classes.
Also just generally speaking to students I have only heard positive experiences from LEAP, but I would like to know more.

That makes sense with the two classes. It just sounds so good in terms of how the literature presents the LEAP option that if my daughter does decide to attend, I’m going to strongly encourage her to enroll in LEAP.

Someone on the thread tried to send me a private message, and I apologize, but something happened with Pop Up blocker and I couldn’t retrieve it. Please resend if you can. Thanks.

I really like the leap program after i looked into it… And i just found out you dont have to tale general ed classes in the program… You can take classes that have to do with your major… For example im thinking about taking business management and one of the eng speech classes they require you to take

Ive seen the leap brochure already but im more concerned about people’s personal evperiences… Because if the leap program is really good than i might consider going to penn st in the summer of another collee in the fall like u of pittsburgh.

THe LEAP Program is amazing! I know tons, really TONS of firnes who went into it and they all said it was a awesome experience and really helped them learn how to adjust to a college setting. Many people they met from the LEAP program they are still close friends with. It’s a awesome way to start out your college career. Many people ask to start in the summer just because of the LEAP program and how much fun summer is!

I was a LEAPer last summer (2011). I would recommend summer session for anyone! It has been my favorite time I have had at Penn State so far.

I was in a speech and writing pride which was an excellent choice! I had friends who did not do LEAP and they wish they did. Two classes with the same 24 people is really nice. Your teachers somewhat work together and it is the perfect amount of work to do yet still enjoy yourself!

Outside of classes there is tons to do! It can get very hot in the dorms (make sure you and your roommate have a bunch of fans! Between me and my roommate we had three!) so I spent a lot of time outside. There is always movies at the HUB on the weekends! The pool next to the Tennis courts and future ice rink is open and costs like $2 or $3 with your ID. I went there all the time to cool off with my LEAP. Your mentor will plan (supposed to) at least one thing a week. Sometimes it will be like pizza parties or trips to the creamery or a study session. But really the amount of things to do is endless. Buses run all the time to the two movie theaters off campus. One of the ski mountains does outdoor movies on the weekends too. Spikes games are fun to go to, too. They are a minor league to Pittsburgh and they play right on campus! But really it is up to you what you do. The more ideas you have to give to your mentor the more you can do as a group! I was very rarely bored! When I was bored I would go on walks around campus and get myself lost and find my way back.

I was beyond excited to do LEAP or summer session in general because I was leaving my friends behind. But after a summer in the valley I don’t regret it at all! I am actually headed back this summer to be a mentor! Fall was so much easier, having already done summer. Fall can get crazy cause you jump right into football and clubs and stuff and it is a lot to take in at once. But if you have the opportunity to Summer session, LEAP or not LEAP I highly recommend it!
