Hi, I've been accepted to Berkeley for transfer FALL 2010. However, there is this class that shows up in my "Conditions of Admission" list. It says:
"In addition, you must:

* Complete the following specific course(s):
- Math XXX "

This class it is required for my major (Engineering). I took the class for the first week this quarter (Spring 2010) but as the professor was extremely hard I decided to drop with no grade record.
I was thinking, should I tell my admissions officer the truth (I'm already taking a lot of hardcore classes, don't have much time as I play in the tennis team and don't wanna risk my gpa so I dropped the class) OR should I tell her that I couldn't get in to the class (this class is only offered once per quarter)???

Perhaps you did not understand what was meant by a “condition of admission.” It means you must complete the course before being allowed to register for classes in Fall 2010. Can you take it during summer? If not, you should be contacting Cal now to see if anything can be done.

Just because you dropped the course doesn’t mean it’s erased from all records that you ever enrolled. If you tell them you couldn’t get into the class, they may check, and if they find you tried to lie to get out of a condition of admission you won’t be going to Berkeley.

The admissions and RECORDS office keeps a record of all added classes, even if it was just for a minute! Last year, I added a hip hop class (but dropped it almost immediately) and I STILL see it on my transcript!

1: Never lie to your admission officer or anyone in admissions. They may make note of that on your file and it might (will) cause problems for you later on in the future.
2: Let them know what really happened, and yes, I’m sure your CCC can track that you were indeed enrolled in the class (no matter how long/short it was).
3: If it was on your Conditions…(what mikemac said).

“but as the professor was extremely hard I decided to drop”

The class is REQUIRED for your major. Why would you drop it? The professor is “hard”? You realize you applied to Berkeley, right?

I’m assuming you listed this class on your update form. Berkeley probably accepted you because they knew you were taking your major prereqs. If not, they would have never admitted you.

"The admissions and RECORDS office keeps a record of all added classes, even if it was just for a minute! Last year, I added a hip hop class (but dropped it almost immediately) and I STILL see it on my transcript! "

Your school doesn’t have a NGR (No Grade on Record) drop option? At most CCs, if you drop a class during the first 3 weeks of a semester/quarter, no record of it will show up on your official transcript. Community Colleges have this because a lot of people change their schedule and add classes during those first 3 weeks.

Uh, I’m not sure what kind of fascist community colleges that some of you guys go to… but at least for mine if you drop before the first 3 or 4 weeks, there is NO record of it on your official transcript. I highly doubt UCB admissions has nothing better to do that to call up your community college and ask them every course you have added and dropped (seriously who cares right?).

That said, you’re kinda screwed if you didn’t take a REQUIRED course for your admission. As was mentioned, call up admissions to see if they will allow you to take it over the summer. But honestly, you’re going to have to step up your game big time if you wanna succeed at UCB.

Brad19, all I see you do is ***** in every thread that pertains to Berkeley. Did you get rejected and feel so itty-bitty and insecure? Is that why you have to seek out threads and criticize anyone who is not “good enough” for Berkeley? Apparently, it’s too good for you.

It is moot if it’s on your record or not, the point is it’s a condition of your admission. You need to call and make sure that you can take it in the Summer and that it won’t impact your admission if you do so. Why you didn’t take in the spring doesn’t really the matter because the fact is you just didn’t.

I’m thinking about asking if I can drop a class (not a preq, but IS on the condition of admission) I’m now taking with a w, and take it in the summer. sigh

spydimag: Actually, I already have a Cal degree ('06). I just can’t stand the people starting threads about not being able to fulfill the requirements of enrollment and hoping Cal makes an exception for them. Grow the f*** up and take some responsibility people.

dont warry!
I was admitted in Media studies major and I have not finished one pre-req course.
I sent email to the admission office and they helped me update already.
u also could take it during the summer, why not?

Take the class over summer and and tell admissions. dropping a class that was a pre req for an engineering major was admission suicide for you bro… get it done before the fall. engineering as a major has series of classes that all need to be completed before you can move on, if you miss a class it screws up the series and you wont be able to take the classes they need you to take in the fall to graduate on time.

I can feel you though, I dropped a class that wasn’t related to my major because it was @ night and was murdering my work/ sleep schedule. on my CAL admissions conditions it says I need it done as well. fortunately I am a spring admit~ so I am going to just retake it in the fall and just suffer through the night classes :(.

for those people, u could update the courses u have taken and in progress, if those course dont affect u to finish IGETC or 90 quarter units, they would help u to update the conditions.
I have one pre-req course which I had to go to Cal to take it, my cc doesnt offer that course.

Umm Im in the same boat as you…except the courses I wrote down was for spring quarter…which I wasn’t able to register for. I don’t think there is any possible way for them to hold that against me. I mean, it isnt my fault that I couldn’t register for the class as it was filled up already.

Also, ppl, do u realize how ridiculous you sound by saying that by just not taking one pre req class ur decision is going to be taken back???

@umwhat
for engineering its not ridiculous. I know multiple people who were rejected from colleges for missing only one pre req in engineering~ it is an extremely competitive major…

I hope he doesn’t get rejected because of it- I really do. I don’t want to get rejected for missing the class I dropped either. I am just pointing out the seriousness of his situation and that he NEEDS to get enrolled in that class for summer A S A P.

I am currently missing one physics class plus lab that I listed on my original app. for spring because I couldn’t sign up for it since it is full. I am transferring from UC as a bio major. I would cry if my acceptance get cancelled because of this.
