Accepted to Kinesiology!

My daughter just got accepted to Kinesiology. She’ll be in ICS (Independent Course Study) with a concentration in Occupational Therapy.

Congratulation to your daughter! =]

We are waiting still for response for the same major. If you don’t mind what are your daughter’s stats?

waiting still. 3.81 GPA, 2020 SAT (1380 Reading/Math), work, ECs, etc.

:*(

Sure! Her stats are:

Cal Poly GPA 4.27
ACT–30
All As except for one B in APUSH
AP History, AP Bio. AP English, AP Gov’t./ AP Econ
Honors Pre-Calculus & Triginometry at community college
Honors American Literature
Statistics at community college

1-5 hours a week work–not related to major
11-15 hours a week clubs/activities

I was just looking at the copy of her application. I can’t believe how simple this app. was compared to the UCs, USC and Stanford! All those essays, ECs and supplements they want! Sheesh! So far all of the 5 schools she’s been admitted to don’t require essays or a lot of “extras”. It will be interesting to see how she does with the remaining 5 (with essays, etc.)

I would be thrilled if she decides on Cal Poly!

Congratulations to your daughter! She worked very hard and deserves it.
Why are you hoping your daughter goes to Cal Poly? She will likely get in to several UCs as well. What is your thinking? I have begun to feel the same way for my son. I have been to the campus 3 times in the last year and I love it. Everyone I know really likes it too. I just get a positive vibe from CP. I also like the housing choices, but not sure about the food. I like that the cost is lower and that there are good connections to jobs at CP. I love the downtown, the weather and the campus is large, but not too big.
My son likes it too, but he also loved Davis. He is worried about the “hands on” part a little. he has not really done much that way besides the labs at school. He is very “book” smart. He is hoping that he can learn the “hands on” stuff and that will help him in life too.
Anyway, i would love to hear from another parent about what you like about CP.
Congrats again!
Just waiting to hear if he is accepted…

momofmv, My daughter is in her freshman year at Cal Poly and she loves it. It is not all “hands on,” but certainly it seems like the classes in their majors they get very involved in projects. I feel like she is getting such a quality education there and am very glad that she is not enrolled at a huge university with classes with 800 students in a huge lecture hall. There were 24 students in her Calc II class during her first quarter, and the teacher knew all of the students names and was available for help.

The students at Poly are very academically engaged (which she loves), possibly because they do declare a major in advance. The school seems to lure the students who are focused and motivated. It truly is a great school, and we are so glad that she found it!

Well, I’m not so sure about getting into the more selective schools (certain UCs, USC, etc.) That’s when the essays and ECs and teacher recs. really have to stand out. When I see some of the things other kids have done here on CC, I realize just how competitive it is. She only applied to three UCs and even then somewhat reluctantly. It’s funny how your son loves Davis. Mine didn’t. :frowning: I did, though! Especially the sweet little town on a warm October evening. She also applied to UCLA and Berkeley, neither of which she’s in LOVE with. Not to mention–they don’t have the major she prefers. Cal Poly does. But, we encouraged her to apply to at least a few UCs.

We think it’s an honor to attend Cal Poly. I know two girls, both Valedictorians, who passed up places like UCLA and Cal to attend Poly. That says something! I also know other very bright kids who came from out of state to attend. Everyone I know who went to Poly or has a kid there, always has positive things to say! To me, it feels every bit as “prestigious” as a UC. Just something about it. I like the idea of “hands on” and smaller classes overall. Since she plans to go into Occupational Therapy as a grad student, Cal Poly is perfect with the Kinesiology ICS with a concentration on OT. Health career advisors help them take the right pre-reqs. and with the application process to grad. schools in her field. It just seems more “practical” than the large research schools.

I really would like her to visit Cal Poly again, but this time when students are in session. She needs to feel the energy of kids on campus. Just isn’t the same during the summer. She needs to focus less on the buildings and more on “the vibe”. Yes, I know she’s disappointed that it doesn’t have that “traditional” East coast campus “look”. But, that sure doesn’t seem to bother the students who have come through there! I honestly feel that Cal Poly is an ideal match for her. She would fit right in! AND, it’s a perfect 2½-3 hour distance from us. Not to mention–better for our budget. ;)

P.S. Now, of course, if she got into Staaaanford… :)

Best wishes to your son!
