Accepted to Northeastern, honors program and scholarship. RD but got notified in Feb?

Hi there,

So I was accepted on the 3rd of Feb to Northeastern, and got accepted to the honors program and got a 15k/year scholarship and am obviously very pleased with this!
I wanted to know how prestigious this program is? Why was I accepted now, in february, instead of the regular notification date around April 1st (I applied RD).....?
Is it normal to get a scholarship like this? How special/prestigious is this? And why NOW, so early?
Anyone else got the same/ been accepted early like this??

thanks a lot!!

Hello bigapple! I’m not certain about Northeastern, but many colleges send early acceptances to students that qualify for scholarships before the official notification deadline. USC is another example.

Sorry I’m not much help, but congratulations on the scholarship!! :)

Northeastern is an excellent school (I think somewhere in the 60’s in USNWR-- for whatever that’s worth). It is especially known for its internship program, which is one of the best in the US. It the past, they have been pretty generous with Merit Scholarship money.

Congrats

thanks!

does anyone know why I was accepted so early when I applied RD??

It just happens sometimes. Don’t worry about this.

I’d assume it means that they really want you. The merit scholarship would be further proof of that.

@bigapple12: when did you submit your commonapp? and when did you send in all of your credentials? I applied 12/30/11, eagerly waiting for a letter from NE and other colleges!

Colleges sometimes accept students who they really want to attend early. The merit scholarship fits in with that.

This happened to me with another university.
How did you find out?

I submitted most of my materials by the end of november but my test scores and financial documents were not submitted until the end of january- they may have even arrived after the deadline…
I received an email entitled “your admissions decision” on the 2nd of Feb, and it said a decision had been made and to log in to the NU portal- I did, and I was very excited to find I had been accepted to NU, the honors program, and had been given a scholarship!

I am international and thus I am called an “international scholar” and I read somewhere that international students with impressive academics can be rewarded with 5,000-15,000$ in scholarships. I still never expected it though, and especially not so early!

I think I read that 25% of applicants/students (not sure which) are awarded merit aid (which can be up to ~$20K? and then there are 100 full-tuition/full-ride scholarships offered, plus some set aside for Boston area students and minorities), and 10% are offered admission into the honors program. So it’s a big deal when you are looking at a top 100 school like Northeastern, but merit money at an expensive school is pretty common, for recruitment’s sake. Also, some schools try to notify students as early as possible, even if they aren’t exactly a “rolling admissions” school. Northeastern notified me and others from my high school about 15 days prior to the date they said EA decisions would go out - I was the only one who was accepted, meaning it wasn’t based on the strengths of the applications in that case. So it’s possible that they reviewed your application early simply because of geography - they appreciate international students, that I know.

Congrats on the early admission and the scholarship!

Hii! I’m right there with you. I was just notified that I’ve been accepted to the Honors College and awarded the Dean’s Scholarship… I don’t really know why we’ve been notified so early but I’m so happy to see my first decision letter haha. I looked on the website… it says they have 1,910 honors students at the university total out of around 12,000 undergrads total I believe…

was the notification regarding scholarship available online too?

@CAdancer, I received the same admissions package as you! I also live in California, and I’ve been told that schools like Northeastern or University of Rochester, for example, are trying to expand to a more nationally-represented student body (i.e. California kids.) Where else did you apply?

Hi,
I am a Kurdish student from the Kurdistan region, located in Iraq!
I was quite surprised also. I got in early February into the honor engineering program with 40k scholarship.
To be honest, Northeastern wasn’t my top choice, but now It kinda is.
the 40k scholarship is a big helper, although I didn’t apply for any scholarship.
Being in honors, I get to choose classes early, get the best professors, get the best co-op positions and gain a large amount of undergrad research. In this way, I think I am a stronger application for competitive grad schools that going to Berkeley, lets say, in which I can’t show myself as in Northeastern.
Besides, the reason northeastern is not in top 20-ish is because it is a 5 year graduation school, while US news takes 4year graduation rate into 20% consideration of its rankings.
Besides, Boston is a great city. except its winters which isn’t a big deal.
Congrats on your acceptance and hopefully we can meet next year.
Contact me if you want.
Go Huskies :)

Congratulations Alan!
