The Baylor Honors College Site says that the average SAT score for students in the BHP is 1370, and that most of their students are top 5% in their high schools. Im 2nd decile, and got a 1300. I think my essays and my 800 Writing score+AP Eng test 5 gave me a huge edge since I proved to be very good at the field I plan to major in (journalism).

Texas is now the only school I havent heard back from. They have an average SAT score of 1230, and 66% of their students are top 10%. These stats seem far less intimidating than those of the Baylor Honors Program, but is it wrong to expect that whatever caught Baylor's eye and made them willing to overlook my class rank/SAT Math and CR deficiencies will also make UT willing to overlook my non top 10% status?

the communications college at ut is very competitive, especially if you aren't in top 10%. it isn't very fair at all, but a lot of people get turned away because they aren't in top 10% at texas. really a lot of it just depends on how many of those top ten kids applied to ut this year. the 1300 is kind of low, but not necessarily for ut. and your 800 writing score will be useful. if your essays were really good you should stand a shot, although you may not get into the journalism major right away. but i went to the ut colloquium over the summer and they said that if you dont get admitted to your major of choice the first year its actually really really easy to transfer sophomore year.

I applied for comm first and engineering second (engineerings harder to get into anyway, and I dont really want to do it). Is it possible I may be shut out of the comm college, but let into general studies?

absolutely. texas lets a lot of kids into the general studies program if they dont get into their first or second choice right away. and like i said, when i went there this summer the communications director guy said its really easy to transfer sophomore year. i do think you have a good chance of getting in though, it just all depends on the top 10% people. haha i feel kinda bad. im one of them, and accepted into comm. HOWEVER im in under film, not journalism, so maybe im not hurting your chances :)

also keep in mind, if you really want to go to ut, and if by some chance you get waitlisted (i dont really think you will though), a ton of people that apply there dont go. i know most of the top ten kids at my school use it as a safety.
