Accepted with LOW SATs. (Byerly, NSM)

i respect you DHA for the lesson you've learned, but there is definitely nothing that can justify your arrogance. thrills, that isn't necessary. nspeds, are we playing devil's advocate here?

Devil's advocate? My argument was not intended to arouse dispute; I was not being eristic.

Once again, it would be nice if Harvard admitted more students of lower socio-economic status, but they are under no ethical obligation to do so, nor do any students of the aforementioned status have a unique claim to acceptance.

Of course, one could employ Rawls's second principle of justice viz. the least well-off in society should benefit the most from socio-economic inequalities, but I tend to be more of a Nozickean about these issues.

"Just because you are smart, doesn't mean you have to overshadow a statement with overbearing words and incongruent sentences."

He's a well-educated person. There's a huge difference. He just memorizes facts and big words. I'm a conservative, and I think that Harvard should (and according to stats has) admit more low-income people. HFAI. I'm a conservative, and I know right from wrong, unlike the liberals. ANd, get this, the adcoms are actually mostly conservatives such as myself... There's a shocker!

"I'm a conservative, and I know right from wrong, unlike the liberals."

How can you say this? Both parties have been known to do some rather shady stuff. It really weakens your argument to make shots at members of the opposing political party.

Everything turns into a fight on this board. If you guys are smart enough to be applying to Harvard -- which you are -- then you shouldn't always have to dissolve into petty childish arguments (cough cough DHA...) Its funny to read, but sad to reflect on.

i agree with DHA 100-percent.

Well, we have this guy (Nspeds) who is trying to find fallacy in an argument just because he doesn't agree with the use of the word 'poor', since in his mind it is a "nuanced" term. Well, of course it is. When you try to classify as it as something it is not (cough cough low income) your overshadow the truth and understate the truth.

Which one sounds more emphatic and real?

"Termination of a pregnancy"

or

"Killing a baby"

Now, I am not going into the logic of whether a pregnancy is a bay or not, but clearly the latter phrase is a more accurate and emphatic description of the actual situation.

But hey, maybe I was wrong. Maybe he was just playing devil's advocate. Whatever. He comes on this board and uses his complex train of through in what is obviously his academic forte and tries to sound superior. Dude, we know you are smart, you probably go to Harvard. We are high school kids. We haven't been exposed to whatever it is that you are studying is. Most of us dont even understand you, and it is fine to admit that. Just because you are bright and talented in a field doesn't mean you should go and try to argue an issue using overbearing words and syntax.

Candlize, this all comes down to politics. Liberals and the Democratic Party claim to be on the side of the poor, ever since FDR. However, they are the ones who champion political correctness and all of those other things. Their political correctness, then in turn, enables individuals to understate the real situation of the POOR. It's like that political proverb I heard once:

A man is drowning in the middle of the lake, 50 ft from the shore. A Republican throws him a 10 ft rope and tells him to swim for it. A Democrat passes by and throws him a 50 ft rope, then lets go.

I am actually Libertarian.
That is incorrect; word-use is trivial with respect to the construction of my argument. I used my terminology out of preference.
Which one sounds more emphatic and real?
That is predicated on your opinions and feelings; if you truly abided by the principles of logic, you would go for the statement that is most truth-functionally intact when schematized.

From your use of 'logic' thus far, it is evident that you do not even know what 'logic' is.

Then stop arguing as if you were right. Unsupported generalizations and strawmans such as these

I am neither of the two; I merely have experience in my discipline.

If such syntax and diction is too complicated for you, then you should not attend Harvard.

im a libertarian too.
you guys are douches.

why does everything in this forum have to degenerate into personal affronts? :/ something similar happened to me regarding an SAT crisis in the parents' forum. college confidential is an extremely useful tool, but polite words often mask ruthless competitiveness on these boards....

this is ridiculous. please stop. the conditions of the admissions game are harsh enough already. a little solidarity would really help under these circumstances.

ontolome, you're a tool.

Look, I didn't ignite this. He did.

Hey nspeds, are you a nerd? Seriously, it seems like you would be the kind of person who would not go to the football games and just be tall and geeky-looking. I met a lot of your type at MIT lol. Its ok though, the ladies will come one day...when you begin your Google-like corporation.

Maybe you should try your elevated sentence structure and big man words as pickup lines? maybe then, you'll get a date :)

I am not the "big shot college student" picking fights over emphatic use with 17 year olds.

Ugh. I gave this guy one last chance at rational discourse, but he has failed miserably.

I bid you good luck, for you will need it no matter where you go.

Good Day:)

Can this debate about nothing finally end?

and it gets worse..... this is petty, guys. stop it.

Hey I am not the one that keeps adding to the flames.

Okay, DHA, but you could be the bigger person here and end the argument. I mean if you refuse to respond, then this kid will have no one to argue with.

you were one of the main agitators. just try to end this in as gentlemanly a way as possible.... you guys are harvard applicants for god's sake.

I did!! I offered him a cookie like a page ago! unfortunately he didnt take it. I think the "you can't get a girlfriend" remark really ended it.
