Lukester...Furman is gaining another student with so much to offer. The faculty is going to love him. Keep us posted on how his year develops please.

so, i guess no college decision is ever final until all those tuition deposits and reply forms are sent in. even though the furman offer was amazing and hard to turn down, i'm enrolling at university of alabama honors in the fall. lukester- congrats to you and your S for finally making the decison. i know how stressful and mind-boggling it can be!

Yes, May 1st is finally here... And there have been lots of emotions running rampant in our house. My son too did not choose Furman. He went with his first love, Wake. He turned down W & L too. I must say that I had thought the admissions process was hard. This was heart-wrenching. We all really did like - even love - all three schools. I only wish I had three of him so we could experience all three wonderful places.

In the scheme of things - bigger picture wise - I know this is not monumental. In fact I felt kind of spoiled whining about having to choose. Obviously, it's all good and any of the choices would most probably have borne out to be the correct one.

Good luck to your son Lukester, and to you wdlan and everyone else here who has helped me through this long long journey.

See you in the South sometime!

Wake and Alabama are both great schools. You can't lose there. Best of luck to you both!

thanks Lukester. Furman isn't too bad either ;)

lovemykids- that's ironic...furman, wake, and w&l were part of the four that my choices came down too.

best of luck to everyone in their chosen school...and i thank CC and all the various posters for the guidance and support this board has provided throughout this process!

Ok guys/ gals I am going to add to the sadness here. I too made a ninth hour decision and made my choice of Trinity in San Antonio. I saw Furman and had an overnighter and sat in on classes etc and just loved it. The students were so incredibly friendly and the campus is drop dead gorgeous but in the end I liked the vibe at Trinity and the opportunities for easy double major and starting on major classes in my Freshman year. Furman said basically Junior year. Since I am an international student, I am used to lots of diversity and nationalities and Trinity did that better. I feel very strongly that both are great educations and really great people and I too thank everyone here because it certainly helped with the angst and filled in the blanks till I could get to that final place. I thank you too wdlan, Lukester and Faline 2 for your great insight and play by plays. It was a really really tough choice but had to go with the gut. wdlan88 you have the courage of conviction and I applaud you for turning down that $$ to also go with your gut. That is ultimately what it comes to when you get to the final decision time because while you know that a couple or a few would work financially and personality wise, one just says here I am. So good luck to you all and thanks so very much for making this process a little clearer, and filling in the blanks till this international kid could get there and make the choice.

out of curiosity, wdlan88, so what made you choose alabama over furman in the end? distance from home? size?

to everybody, congrats. and have fun at graduation. ( :

dear wdlann88 and froshtobe and lovemykids:
It is hard to say goodbye to institutions like Furman when the good people there really wanted you. Your posts are thoughtful and appreciated, and my S also struggled till the last minute last April with his choices, and found declining the honor of admission to other schools to be hard. Wake Forest and Alabama honors and Trinity are also all rich and interesting communities who are lucky to get you.

I am pleased that Furman will be getting students of the caliber of eppsas’ D, bethel's S, Lukester's S next fall! Furman is a very warm and supportive school with demanding classrooms. You will be surprised at how much the faculty at Furman will challenge you and sponsor you so you can achieve your dreams for internships, travel, and excellent grad school admissions. When you return, you will find friends for a lifetime on the faculty. Best to each new Furman Class of 2010er. My advice is to give Furman and the Greenville community your all..leave your mark.

ragamuffin- i'll send you a pm friday when i'm done with my ap exams.

I have been reading through the posts here for a while, although I never have gotten into posting myself. Congratulations to everyone who was admitted to Furman; selectivity is increasing yearly, only around 40% admit rate this year apparently, maintaining its place as one of the nation's finest liberal arts schools. I myself applied to 9 schools, was fortunate enough to receive acceptances to them- but ultimately it came down to Duke and Furman. While Princeton and Georgetown have many strong programs, I truly felt at home at Furman. When I returned for the Herman Lay Scholarship Weekend, I feel in love with the university ever more. Upon arrival back at home from a two-week rush of interviews, I was offered the Lay Scholarship. The warmth and true appreciation that the Furman community delivered during the entire process was genuine. I was soaked right in. From the reception at Dr. Shi's home, to the interviews, to the time with students, to the closing banquet, Furman was amazing. While I was invited into other scholarship programs at other schools (Robertson, Poteat, etc), Furman's scholarship soon became the best option- when advertised as one of America's largest merit awards, it truly is. To everyone else out there (juniors and sophomores), apply for the Lay. Come to Furman!

welcome to Furman, HBYNC, and may you have an excellent first year. I am sure you will contribute to making Furman an even better place.

By the way, if anyone else from Lay Scholars weekend is on, let me know. I met so many great people and would like to know who is coming to Furman.
