My son went to Access Exeter and really found his place there. He, of course, really wants to attend Exeter next year as a 9th grader. Would it help him (at Exeter or elsewhere) to have one of his instructors write a letter for him? Do they have access to his 5-week "transcript?" The comments he received were exceptionally good and it was obvious that he adjusted well to his new environment. Is this worth anything? Perhaps to just include in the Parent essay?

Comments are appreciated on how best to include this experience in his application. It was a short period of time but it really made an impact and solidified his ambition to enroll in a boarding school and pursue a better education than what he could get at home.

My daughter attended a summer program at Hotchkiss, and when she applied to boarding schools, we asked the AOs whether we should include the summer evals with her applications… They all said yes.

May depend on whether the teacher is a regular faculty member or just visiting summer faculty (easy to check on the website).

It would also probably help to include in his essay that he enjoyed the boarding experience and community. However, Exeter during the academic year is a lot different from the summer program, so I would recommend a visit during the regular school year.

They would love to hear your comments and your child’s experience at the their summer school !! Tell them he found his place their and have the teacher write something for him. These schools want to know you are confident it is a good fit when you are applying!

They grade on a 3 point rubric (I forget what it is- but basically Exceptional, Great, and Good). What did your son get in each of his 3 classes? Is reporting “Good” a good idea, or only “exceptional”?

His grades were average, but I felt like the teacher comments were very complimentary and reflected well on him. I’m not sure it would help or hurt him for Exeter. Perhaps just a request to have one of his teachers to write a letter on his behalf?

My daughter did a 3year summer portal in environmental science at Hotchkiss when she was in middle school. When she was applying to BS, all the schools were happy to have those evaluations included in her apps.
