My school report and two recommendations under the common app were assigned on 10/30 and downloaded 11/2.

Then there's a third teacher recommendation assigned 11/13 and downloaded 11/14. How is this possible? (I also did not ask for this recommendation to be sent...)

I didn't notice until now when I was replicating my common app to update it slightly for other colleges. I'm afraid since this has sent send one more recommendation that offers nothing new, that will be frowned upon by admissions, especially considering I already have an extra recommendation sent (which actually does offer new insights into my life in politics). I also feel like I can't say NO don't read that to admissions...especially two weeks after it happened!

We use Naviance and our counselors are the ones who send them, though I have 3 of 5 teacher recommendations uploaded to naviance (is there some automatic send thing where all uploaded recs are sent?). Which is why I’m confused on how that happened (though if it was someone clicking submit on this end I won’t find that out until tomorrow morning) two weeks after everything else was sent.

Virtually ALL US colleges require 1 or 2 teacher recommendations; none that I know of require 3. I’m not sure why naviance allows you to go beyond 2 recs, but you should not have 3 in the system. That seems to be the problem.

I asked 5 separate teachers, read their recommendations, and only am choosing between 3 for each college (which two to send). My counselor said I could pick and choose which to send where, but I guess if it’s automatic that isn’t true and I’ll need to cancel requests for all but two? Which is unfortunate because there are two recommendations that I was planning on alternating between colleges since each was more suited to some colleges than others.

Most students DO NOT get to read their teacher recommendations and therefore do not get to pick and choose which ones to send to which schools. This sounds like a school-specific issue.

You should talk with your GC about what went wrong, and how you should go about correcting the issue for additional apps.

Interesting that you read the recommendations. My DD checked the box that she did not read it.

She invited 3 teachers as well, however all three were sent to all colleges. Some colleges allow 3, however others like Yale says 2. My assumption is that they will only read the first 2. Agree with an earlier poster that if Yale looks at third, it should be fine as long as it doesn’t counter another recommendation.

Yale will definitely read the third one. Here is what Yale says on the subject:

May I submit supplementary letters of recommendation?

If you feel the need to submit extra information, you may ask one additional recommender to write on your behalf. Please do not solicit this additional letter unless you feel it will add substantially to your application. The writer should know you well personally or have mentored you closely in some capacity. For example, if you have engaged in advanced scientific research, you should consider asking your research mentor to write a letter of recommendation for you. Please ask that person to include the following at the top of their letter: your full, legal name as it appears in your application, the name and location of your high school, and your date of birth. The letter should be labeled “Supplementary” to avoid confusion. See the guidelines about Supplementary Materials.

Kdog, the problem is this would actually be a fourth letter since I got an actual supplementary letter from a political figure who I’ve worked with.

Turns out the counseling secretary made the mistake and click for that one to be sent as well from naviance. Good thing to know that naviance isn’t automatically sending uploaded letters though.

So the counseling secretary who made the error called an admissions secretary who said it was fine, but I’m not sure if that information got any farther down the line.

Thanks for the replies to my panic! Now there really is nothing left to do but wait.
