Dan:

I instructed my HS to submit one teacher recommendation in addition to my counselor recommendation to Tufts via the Common App. They did that weeks ago and everything was complete and fine with my file. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, just a couple of days ago they transmitted a second teacher recommendation (from a different teacher) to Tufts. I believe its a good recommendation and I intend to use it for schools that require two teacher recommendations if I don't get in ED to Tufts - but, I'm concerned that it will irritate Tufts as you guys do not recommend additional recommendations. So - should I leave things alone or go through the hassle of trying to get you guys to pull it out of my file? I lean towards just leaving it alone but I'd love some feedback from the guy who knows how things really work.
Thanks

We’re not jerks. Unless this recommendation says things about you that raise nasty flags, a second recommendation simply cannot hurt you (now, a fifth recommendation, that might be a different story…).

Don’t worry about this.

In both of my kids’ cases, I’m convinced the “supplemental” rec is the one that was most effective in its advocacy, even though we have never seen it. For my younger son, the teacher in question would only send his rec to two schools, no matter how many schools were on one’s list. It was a no-brainer which two got that letter! (Tufts was one of them.)

The other thing: if the GC office at my kids’ schools sent out the rec letters, they sent the same thing to every school on the list. They did not have time or resources to go through and pick out one humanities letter for College X and a math rec and a hum rec for College Y.

Colleges get this stuff and know that parts of this process are out of your hands.
