I didn't realize that UVA only wants one teacher recommendation because I thought all colleges wanted two. I'm applying early and asked two teachers to submit recs...the one who doesn't know me as well already submitted his, but if I had known in advance, I would have asked the second one (who isn't done) to submit hers alone. I don't want to tell this second teacher to not send my recommendation now because I think it will make me look irresponsible (which I know I was, but still).

Is this okay? I have high stats and everything and I really like UVA, so I would hate for this to keep me out...

Two is fine. They only require ONE and from what I understand they don’t want TEN (i.e. don’t send a bunch of recs). I don’t think two is going overboard. Don’t sweat it and have the teacher you prefer send it in as well as just go with the one that is already submitted.

What they say is an additional rec is ok if it sheds new light, provides a different perspective. My interpretation of this is that two different subject areas qualify as different perspectives, because they highlight your academic diversity. For example, if one rec talks about your prowess in math and the other one in history, they together say something more than just one of them.

So, unless the math teacher is going to say something drastically different from the English teacher (or science, history, or coach) I believe the view is please send your GC and ONE teacher LOR as stated in the directions.

If sending two good teacher recs instead of one were to keep someone out (who would otherwise get in), then UVA admissions folks would have to be nuts. Since all evidence indicates they’re not, the concern can safely be dismissed. :-)
