any way to take accounting classes at U of M if your not a ross BBA student? And can you take enough credit hours to help satisfy CPA requirements (assuming that you do a MAcc for the 5th year)?

thank you

thank you

Yes, you have to get permission from the professor to get into an accounting class though. You can really take as many as you want, just be aware that LSA will only allow 20 credits outside of the college to count toward graduation.

One side not–it’s kind of sad that you know you want to be an accountant before you start school. What about being a fireman? Or an astronaut? Is there no romance left in pre-collegiates?

Well, accountants make a lot more than firemen, and is a lot more realistic of a goal than astronaut.

What you are proposing to do is definitely doable.

I see, thanks.

What if I’m in the college of engineering? does the 20 credit limit still count?
And I’m just trying to make as many options for me in college. Since U of M doesn’t have a nice accounting degree that anyone can do, I’m trying to work out a way where I can try to become an accountant if I really like it.

The following link outlines Michigan educational requirements for the CPA exam [Michigan CPA exam requirements - Becker Review - Becker CPA Exam Review](http://www.becker.com/accounting/cpaexamreview/michigan/index.cfm)

The Master’s of Accounting program seems to be the way to go to get the credits needed to take the exam.

I would definitely recommend taking the introductory accounting classes to see if this is something you have interest in or aptitude for before becoming too committed to becoming an accountant.

thank you for the link, the requirements are organized a bit better than the one in the michigan cpa website.

To be able to apply to the MAcc program at Michigan, you need to take the first four semesters of undergraduate accounting. While they have very few slots for non-Ross students in those accounting classes, if you let the professor know you are interested in the MAcc, you should be able to get an override.

^so that is 2 years of undergraduate level accounting courses?

It means four classes

do you think this kind of a courseload would be manageable? I got into the college of engineering and I’m thinking computer science as well as an econ minor. Then adding 4 more courses to this, I wonder if U of M would even let me do that? Isn’t 18 credit hours per semester the limit?

You can pay more to take more, and as well Computer Science is very flexible (one of the reasons I am looking at it). Plus I imagine you’re coming in with some AP credits, and even if you’re not, take some summer classes. You can definitely do it.
