Accounting degree/program advice

I'm looking for some advice on schools and career advice. I went to SBCC and completed all IGETC requirements as well as all lower division requirements for UCSB's Economics and Accounting degree except for ECON 10A which isn't offered at SBCC. I started UCSB this Fall quarter and am feeling like it isn't the best program/ fit for what I want to do career wise after I graduate. I really dislike economics and don't plan on getting a job that requires it. I would like to do a program that focuses more on practical accounting rather than economics. I don’t picture myself as a CFO but really want to do more of basic accounting such as starting out with bookkeeping or payroll. I am thinking about going back to SBCC next semester and finishing the AA degree there, then doing UCSB's extension accounting program. It appears that UCSB extension offers essentially the same classes as UCSB in accounting so I would be getting the same background in accounting. If I go this path I will also take payroll accounting (I'm pretty sure UCSB doesn't offer payroll) and several computer skills classes that would be more useful than some economics classes. I'm not sure what type of accounting I would like to specialize in so I'm going to try to get an internship after taking the payroll class. Also, after a few years of work I might go back to school and get a Masters or more specialized certificates.

I have several questions.

1) Does UCSB's extension program in accounting have a good reputation?

2) What do employers look for? Do they look more at the title of the degree or what types of classes/skills you have? Do they look/care how long it took to get the degree? I'm take longer because I tried to get a variety of classes at SBCC to find the best major. I was seriously considering majoring in a science so did a fair amount of science classes and two semesters of engineering calculus, and will have wasted this quarter if I don't do UCSB.

Please don’t kill your career by becoming a bookkeeper/payroll/AP clerk.

Suck it up and finish your econ + accounting at UCSB and get a job at Big 4 if you REALLY care about your career in accounting.

I’ve seen people go down the road you are thinking of going down and it is not pretty.
