accounting major?

ok, my current major is accounting. i put this major in my application when applying for college when i should've put UNDECIDED. my adviser suggest i take these 4 classes precalculus, islamic art, speech & english composition 1 for the fall semester (2010). this semester i didnt have an adviser to help me select my classes. i just use the school online registration website. my question is should i be taking general classes like intro 101, biology 101, english 2, etc this semester (spring 2011) or classes that pertains to my current major, accounting? my goal is to graduate with an associate degree which is offered at my 4 year college and transfer after 2 years to a university. i also am not sure if i want to stick with the accounting major. if i want to switch majors, how would this affect me?

hope im not too confusing.
ty in advance

If you’re unsure, then I suggest you take, at most, two business/accounting related courses. If you’re thinking about accounting, then I’d say take accounting101 and something that should qualify for most general education requirements…I’m assuming that might be macro- or microeconomics. Then the rest of your courses should be your general education requirements, which would be, as you said, English 2, and other intro courses.

Well, in order to realize whether the accounting is right for you or not, you will have to stick to it for a while, and take some classes in it. I would recommend you to take general and accounting classes simultaneously. For instance, you could take: Intro to accounting (sometimes it’s called Principals of accounting), Macroeconomics, Intro to Sociology, General Psychology, Philosophy, etc. Still, I suggest you to take at least one advanced accounting class, for a person cannot really decide whether something is right or wrong just by taking one intro class.

alright. well, here’s where i stand. i took a visit to my school earlier today and i spoke with a women in the business department. i told her if its possible to change my major back to undecided. she replied back saying its not possible.

i was able to pick up a paper with the list of classes to take in order to be granted an associate in applied science degree (A.A.S.)

from the list, i took 3 of the 19 required class for the degreee and withdrew from one (precal)

my question is … should i continue on and fulfill the other 16 classes in order to obtain that degree? or should i switch majors and have the 3 class credit i earned treat as electives? i have terrible experiences with business classes but i really want to transfer out of my current school with some sort of degree and finish my bachelor degree in a university. help!!!

some of those business classes include principle of accounting 1, business law, cost accounting 1, taxes, microcomputer etc which are all hard for me. i dont want to transfer out with a terrible GPA

If all of those INTRODUCTION courses were difficult for you, then perhaps you should consider a different major. I hate to say that, but it’s either that choice or just study harder.

Taking that A.A.S. route will only put you back to square one where you’ll choose something in a different school. Maybe I’m misunderstanding because of your confusing English towards the end, but you seem like you’re turning away from being an accountant.

i AM turning away from being an accountant. however, my question is, does it matter what classes i take for both freshman semester? i understand my current major is accountacy and i should be taking classes related to it BUT like i said above i should’ve put UNDECIDED instead. i only want to transfer out of my current college to a different college after 1 year and select my actual major there.

since you are a nyc resident, maybe this might help.
im currently enroll in nycct (new york city college of new york) and i want to enroll to Hunter in the fall of 2011. i know i must apply for it now but i would like to know if taking all intro/general classes now that dont pertain to my major (accountancy) good when transferring. how would the administrator look at me as an applicant?

Well I honestly would have no idea how the administrative view would be like, but I can say that even though all the CUNY schools have similar general education requirements, it is a good idea to see which courses are required at your future school. You can find these courses on Hunter’s website, but I don’t know where exactly. Just play around with the website and you’ll eventually find it. Just a heads up, the deadline for Fall 2011 applications is February 1.

Anyway, back to your question, I’d say to check which courses are needed at Hunter, then find their equivalencies by using:

tipps.cuny.edu

It’s a tool for CUNY schools to find the equivalent course. It’ll also show how many credits will go through if you were to transfer.

Anyway, just make sure you cram all of this in before your semester starts so that you can fix up your schedule. For example, I just put in my transfer application to Baruch, and I’m from Queens College. Queens gives me the chance to take all different courses to fulfill the general requirements, meaning that I could take psychology OR sociology. Another example is that I can take philosophy OR linguistics, if I wanted to. On the other hand, Baruch requires that I take specific courses, like psychology, sociology, AND philosophy. It sort of screwed me over, but I’ll just spend one extra semester making up the majority of these classes.
