Accounting or Engineering

i have a hard time selecting one of these majors. I mean i know people say that major in something that interests you, not because of the money. BUT c'mon lets be real. every body wants to major in something that can get them decent cash when the get their bachelors.
I think Engineers have much higher salaries than accountants!!!
what do u guys think ???

Starting salary for a accounting major at the big 4 is about 50k in major markets, engineering starts at around 52K if I'm not mistaken, but accountants see there salary rise comfortable to 75-80k after about 4 years in accounting and about 100k after 7-8 years. Both have solid career prospects, but accounting has the potential to be a million dollar career moreso than engineering.

There're also psychological issues.

If you don't wanna be looked upon as "stupid" for 4 years, I suggest you stay out of accounting.

what would by stupid?? i mean i know that accounting sounds easy. Also I think you need "people's skills" in accounting, which i have absolutely none. Is the math in engineering and accounting same or what??

very different math. don't listen to abcboy, he is the forum idiot. he does nothing but insult business majors. I would recommend doing whatever you prefer.... but I'd say accounting is easier and has better career prospects

lol, no.

They are pretty different careers. Do some reading about each of them and see which one you think you'd be more interested in.

If only this matched bureau of labor statistics.

^^^^ If only the billions of accounting positions weren't in existence it might, but maybe a genius engineer did not think to factor that in. I definitely do not mind admitting accounting is easier than engineering, but geez when ever accounting major tells you what they make you might want to stop being in denial. By the way My Payne, I'm 21 making $24.04 an hour (pro-rated @ 50k salary) + overtime as an Auditing Intern, I can assure you these figures are correct.

you're never going to get an accurate, non-biased response in this forum, specially concerning money.

Yes, people want something that can net them money, but the truth is you can major in anything you want including accounting and never make much money outside of your regular paycheck or you can be a kick ass engineer and land a unique job (you never know) and be financially free for all your life.

You picked engineering because you loved it, you're passionate about what you do and that propels you to get that great job and amount some fairly good wealth.

You can also major in accounting, have no interest whatsoever in the field, dread going to work and only look forward to going home, work at the local supermarket and you're not going to make much money AT ALL... don't follow the money, let the money follow you.

That being said, accounting and engineering are as 2 different fields as it gets, only you can decide what you want. My opinion is biased since I don't really enjoy accounting, and I'm not interested in the engineering field either.

Pick what you chose, but seriously pick it because you love it... I'm speaking from experience here (not my own, but a relative's)... my cousin had a good-paying and prestigious major in mind, only to end up switching halfway through the degree cause she couldn't stand the thought of doing that kind of work all her life. Right now she's about 24/25 and is still in school finishing the bachelor's...

And how is a single data point supposed to prove anything? That's specifically why the bureau of labor statistics are useful. Not everyone is working for the Big 4. Not everyone is making 50K/year. The average salary between accountants and engineers is in the engineers favor.

Nevermind the fact that $24/hour is not impressive for an intern, at all.

^^^^ Obvious denial. $24/hour with OVERTIME is not impressive for an intern? Nothing needs to be said, obvious hater.

LOL, 24/hr + overtime is GREAT for an intern. A lot of the engineering interns I have seen are making between $10-15/hr.

Dawgie, I'm impressed, actually. Are you interning at a big 4 right now? What is your opinion of Crowe & Chizek? That's a larger regional firm, correct?
I'm looking to do the tax track for my Master's (in a year and a half)...so not audit, but how are you liking the experience so far?

I made 35K over 7 months, I didn't consider myself to be anything special. Was I? I honestly don't think $24/hour is special though, that's similar to what many interns make.

Starting Jan 2nd, All I know is Crowe is a pretty large regional firm. I am doing an internship for Audit, so I can't tell you about the experience yet. Either way I'm just using Big Four to get into a top MBA program.

That's awesome man...so you are interning at one of the big 4's? That's great bro. And a great hourly wage, too.
I hope it all goes well.
What do you want to do with your MBA? CFO or something similar at fortune 500?

Not sure right now, I just want to goto a Top MBA program for my own personal achievement purposes. The fact I am unsure is the reason why I chose Big Four and Accounting. It will be a great start for my career.

Def. good luck.
