Accounting student lifestyle vs Engineer's one

hi
it seems that this topic is not gonna end :)
today I visited my cousins in their colleges ,they live on-campus ,2 of them are Accounting majors and 1 is Engineering major.
I will be honest ,the 2 accounting ones have an awesome lifestyle ,study 2 hours a day and spend the rest of day enjoying the college-life ,playing Battlefield 3 and hang out with girls .
while the other one spent 5 hours at least studying and I can say that his day is full of study,reading,...etc
so I am now thinking seriously about this major again "Accounting" ,I love engineering but it seems that it really kills the social-life just like Med school.

how is your lifestyle guys??

did any 1 here go to accounting and then switched to Engineering ?? if yes,how was it ??

I’m just curious, what kind of engineering is your other cousin studying? Sorry for not helping.

Well you can enjoy college life during your first and second year since you are gonna be taking science, math, and the first engineering courses which won’t be as hard as the junior level classes. I am doing CS and god I have to study 24/7 haha

Here’s a suggestion: Go with engineering first, if you feel like its too hard, you are missing out in social life then transfer to a business major like accounting though I doubt they are easier than engineering.

1 is an EE and the other is Chemical engineering

And you will have a higher starting salary than the Accounting majors not to mention working on technology instead of pushing around numbers in a spreadsheet.

Engineers built the tools Accountants use- computers and calculators.

Don’t pick your major because of how much free time in college you have. That’s just dumb. If you don’t want to put in work to become an engineer, then be a business guy and enjoy having lots of girls in your classes.

That’s only an extra 3 hours. There are 24 hours in a day. If you want to have fun you can do it, it’s all about time management.

Stop posting these questions in the engineering forum.

yes sir  just don’t get mad

YYaaSSeeRR

This appears to be a recurring theme for you – Ping-ponging back and forth – accounting-engineering … who makes more money, who has a better lifestyle, who mets more girls, it goes on and on

Learn time management and you won’t have a problem. I went to every home football and basketball game, met and started dating my future wife, participated in several clubs, played a lot of CounterStrike, went out with friends and maintained a high enough GPA to get into several good PhD programs in engineering. I was quite happy with my life. It can be done.

Yeah, I agree with boneh3ad. I had an awesome time as an undergrad and grad student. I had been a bookworm in high school and kept my nose to the grindstone. In college, I learned about partying! Got a full fellowship for my master’s, with a generous stipend. Life was good!

For the OP:

Why do you care so much about sacrificing those hours during your college years to propel you into a profession where you can earn a decent salary for the rest of your life? All you have to do is work hard for four years and land a job which will provide for your living, so you can enjoy the rest of your life to do whatever you want.

I might have one of our famous STEM vs Business debate tonight with my friends. Anyone wants to help out?

Engineering is a lifestyle of its own - something accountants can’t (probably) claim. I have a few friends who are CPA’s. Nice people, nice money, but man, that’s real work they’re doing. Us engineers write some code, design this widget or that gadget, play with the latest and greatest, attend super awesome trade conventions (the hot chicks are not at CES, they’re at the Mid-America truck show in Louisville :)) and so on.

If you plan to mature at age 21 then by all means go to business school, medical school, and so on. If you want to retire with a teenager mentality, party, video games, the wild life, and so on, your inner engineer will be infinitesimally happier than your inner accountant.

I’m speaking from experience as a 50something teenager. Many of my engineer friends in their 40’s and 50’s are exactly like me…

man !! this kind of replies make me think <how stupid=“” am=“” i=“” to=“” even=“” write=“” this=“” topic=“”>??
but you are so right , it’s just I was so confused and thinking that Engineering school will kill my social-life but I guess I will have to prepare for Time-Management thing eventually.
plus I love Engineering and it’s my passion but the Accounting Starting salary and the college-lifestyle just seduced me but, I can do it in Engineering :)</how>

thanks a lot guys for your replies and sorry for the recurring topic.
