Ack…so many choices! Which major?

Yes, I know people change their majors, and I don’t have to decide now and all that jazz, but when it comes down to it, I’m a plan-o-holic…(coughme actually going through with my plans is another story…cough)

In any case, like many-a-clueless person bombarded with the dreaded college questions I dropped the seemingly cover-all answer of “business.” I guess it doesn’t help that those constant college questions every two seconds serve as a reminder of the fact that I’m so clueless as to what exactly is it that I want to do…I haven’t the slightest clue.

Nevertheless, “business” seems to satisfy most. However, some see fit to delve further and ask me “what kind?” Upon which, I answer “International Business” with so much sureness in my voice, that you would think that is was the only kind a person could possibly take.

But to be honest, I haven’t the slightest clue what I want to take. And that irks me to death. Anyone want to delve into my mind and help me out a bit? I know that that’s not quite possible, and it’s ultimately up to me, but it’s nice to have some input.

Please…puppy eyes

First of all, I’m not sure which school I’ll go to. I want to apply to UF, FIU, Berkeley, and MIT. But realistically, I’ll most likely get into UF and FIU.

I’m really leaning towards FIU since it’s in Miami, which has a lot of business, especially international. Plus, I qualify for the 75% Bright Futures scholarship, and I have a good chance at getting a scholarship for being a salutatorian in my class. But, I this can’t fight the feeling that I’m aiming too low. On the other hand, since UF and FIU are state schools, I have a fairly good chance of making to my bachelors without loans.

And to fight of my worry about aiming to low, I do something that probably makes even less sense and I aimed really really high! MIT and Berkely? I hope they don’t laugh my application out of the admissions office…See here for an idea of my chances.

I never considered what would count as middle ground for a school, though. Frankly, I don’t feel like it. At least if I don’t get a dream top school, I can try have decent credit when I graduate by avoiding loans. Out of state fees are a trip anyway. Is it really worth it?

But I digress; this isn’t supposed to be about the school, but rather about my proposed major.

I suppose I’ll start with a list of interests.
--I like art and graphic design. But the idea of actual deadlines taking away the “fun” of this, concerns me. I don’t usually finish a lot of the things I start. And if I don’t feel like doing something artistic, it really isn’t going to turn out too well.
--I’m pretty good at math. Even though, my SAT scores say different…speed is an issue here. Will I be able to handle work load?
--I like computers. Learning about that kind of stuff is pretty interesting, but what do I do with that in the world already doesn’t have a million of? Which lead me to my next point…
--Most importantly, I love to travel. Staying in one place will drive me mad. It’s nice to have a change of scenery every once in awhile. After all “familiarity breeds contempt” and “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” So, basically, if I don’t get out of here at some point at least once a year, home aint going to be so “sweet.” I dabbled with the idea of being a pilot but…I don’t know…

But really, I really want to take trips. I want to go to places like Asia. Heck, even work overseas for a few years. But, what worries me about IT is that there are too many skilled people already, but there would always be need for someone to manage the money. So I’m leaning towards more of a finance concentration and an attempt to learn a foreign language in hopes that I can get sent overseas.

But then marketing seems to have an opportunity to be creative and examine social aspects. I find social differences pretty interesting. And I think it’s also interesting to examine and make predictions. Manipulative, even. Strategy is interesting, and watching strategies work is even better.

*So, what to you think my best bet in a major would be? *

Consider a management major with a focus on strategic consulting or project management or business process re-engineering. (Lots of schools have business process majors).

These people travel a lot, need to put together lots of planning documents and process flows--things that require computers and graphic arts skills.

The job essentially changes all the time--and involves strategic decisions. Plus look into getting knowledge on Six-Sigma (specialized training is involved--and is lacking even among college graduates with degrees in this major).

Best of luck.
