ACT all about Speed?

How do u score well on the ACT? SHould i just read Quickly through the passages? is speed one of the biggest factors in the ACT? Even moreso than the Sat?

yeah it is a big factor on the ACT, not so much on the SAT

My personal method on the ACT is to read through the entire passage before answering the questions, unlike most of my classmates who go to the questions first, and skim for the answers. I think it works better because it asks pretty specific questions that could be easily confused. I always go through and answer the questions at my own (fairly quick) pace. When the proctor calls out that five minutes are left, I go through and guess on all of the remaining questions, without reading them, then I go back to where I was, and continue to answer and correct the questions, actually reading them this time. Most importantly--if you don't know, GUESS! It doesn't hurt you. Good luck!

i hate the ACTs. yes, it is all about speed. its so unfair. stupid ACTs, grr...

I like the ACTs, I mean, as far as standardized tests go (It's not like I prefer the ACTs to dinner and a movie, LOL). You can't beat nothing but multiple choice.

um, hello? theres a writing section. the only thing good about ACTs is theres no guessing penalty, but i dont think it really matters becuz the questions are so much harder and the time limit is CRAZY

Hello. This year, the writing test was optional, and as far as next year goes, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. As far as the questions being harder, the SAT and ACT are a matter of preference, some like the SAT better, it all depends.

The Science & Reasoning section on the ACT requires the most speed in my opinion.

Absolutely, that was my lowest score. I completely ran out of time. Got a 22 I think.

Apart from the Science, the ACT is way better than the SAT, IMO. Writing topics are better for the ACT. I've gotten the draft, and learning styles for the ACT, position paper style, and I took the SAT and got some crap about suppressing the past in order to be successful? W T F... The science part just sucks.

Agreed. ACT's kick the crap out of the SAT's any day of the week. It's a more "friendly" test - the questions aren't meant to be tricky (nice and straight forward - you know it or you don't), unlike the gd SAT's.

Overall, I think the ACT is a much better test than the SAT, since it tests actual knowledge, rather than purporting to measure "ability." However, the time limit somewhat undermines this notion of testing achievement, since we all know that the ability to work fast does not necessarily indicate your level of knowledge. For example, I cannot do the ACT reading section. When I took the ACT in April, my scores read: 36, 35, 32, and 29. My subscore percentiles are even more hilarious: all 99/98's, and a 65 on the reading section where I guessed on a bunch of them. When I took the SAT recently, one kid finished every section with 10-15 minutes left over. His score? Not so hot. Another kid got every question he answered right, but he simply didn't have time to finish. Timing a so-called "assessment" test so stringently really defeats the purpose of measuring a student's body of knowledge.

True.. SO.. read FAST?

I may not be the greatest authority on ACT reading given my score, but yes, read FAST, and don't read unless you absolutely have to. Also, it's a good idea to decide ahead of time what order to do the passages in--there's always one each of natural science, prose fiction, social science/humanities, and arts/literature. That way, the ones you guess on at the end will be most likely to be the ones you'd have trouble with anyway.
