Hello there.. this probably has been discussed before but, I need some tips for the ACT. I'm basically an international student who went to school here in US for 3 months. (I moved here in Feb 2010, and graduated June of that year). I started applying to colleges a bit after that. All colleges only asked me to take the TOEFL (test of english as a second language) because I had just moved but like 2 months ago they started asking for the ACT too (which I think is unfair, because I had no idea what the ACT was!).. I will be taking the ACT next week through arranged testing, and I've been studying like crazy all this time but I can't manage to score decently on my timed practice tests :( I score "okay" on English (27) but math and science are both a disaster, I had to basically re learn all math I knew because I didn't know any math terminology in english.. same goes for science.. lol my reading is very low too (22) By the way, highest Ive managed to score on math is 19 and 21 on science.. My highest composite is 22. A 27 is my goal, not the best score but considering all my disavantages, I think it's okay. Any tips for the test, especially math and science would be awesome! I can't really manage to finish science on time :/ and I don't think I can request a waiver for the ACT requisite .. Thanks for help

Hi I am also international student (live here after 2009). I got 31 composite ACT (36math 35 science 11 writing) I think you should contact colleges whether you need to take TOEFL. Because I got high score on ACT and 4.4 weighted GPA, colleges said that I do not need to take TOEFL because I got 30 on English Section and AP Language and Literature score 4 and 5 respectively. I think math and science portions are pretty easy for Asians. I do not know where you comes from. But, for me, I solve every questions within 30 minutes on science and 35 minutes on Math section. (Sophomore now.) I recommend REAL ACT book (red book) and ACT online prep provided by ACT (19 dollars I think). These prep books or online tools are the only books ACT provides. For me, Online prep really helps. The score was almost same (30 on this test - 2 test and explanation). Also, math section only has couple of trig so you may look over barron’s or princeton review for detail. But, when you use TI84 or 83, these problems are just like elementary. (I use TI84 every time- You cannot use TI89 though). Also, 22 to 27 is pretty easy if you study hard and make your own STRATEGIES. My sister took ACT first and got 21. After I tutor her for 4 months, She got 28 Composite. I tested April test and expect above 31. You need to study really hard.

“I think math and science portions are pretty easy for Asians.”

Somebody link me to the study that says Asians are better at math/science than other races, please?

act released data/statistics. According to that, Asian average score on Math and Science is much higher than white, black, and others. (more than 3 points)

Also, when asians who studied in their countries at least 10 years have a solid learning in math section than any other american high school or junior high.

It’s laughable to use ACT statistics to try to justify calling one race smarter than another in any subject.

But, using your last post, I can justify saying that since you are presumably asian, asians clearly need to work on their grammar.

@khh594: he said math and science are pretty easy for Asians, not that Asians are smarter than another race in any subject. Furthermore, Asians’ SAT average math score is also about 60 points higher than the average population. That may not be able to conclude Asians are definitely better in math comparing to other races, but at least Asians are better in doing standardized math tests

kk…something is pretty cynical. I did not say asian get better score on act. I said math and science section is easy for asians according to data. Also, around me, I can find hundreds asian friends who got perfect score on math and 30’s on science. Also, do you blame asians? For me, grammar is just nothing. It is pretty easy. I got 30 on it while I was freshman. Korean school focuses on grammar heavily and it is just like jr.high english tests. If you are blaming asians, you are better to study your OWN study and way.
