ACT in 10th grade

is there any disadvantage if one sends his/her ACT score from test taken in her 9/10th grade itself?

As long as it is a decent score, or, if not, you later send a higher score, no disadvantage save possibly for Carnegie Mellon which says it wants applicants to submit. tests taken in junior or senior year. See https://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/standardized-test-requirements and open SAT Test, ACT Test, and Subject Tests.

If you are asking whether you should actually send it while in the 9th or 10th grade, then that depends. Colleges typically keep test scores sent for some period of time after they are sent and they will then be matched with an application when it finally shows up, but there may be some that may not keep it long enough to have it when you finally apply.

I think if you have a decent to really good score and know what college you want to go to, you can definitely send in your scores early.

There is a small risk that they significantly change the testing format, and that colleges want the new format. They did this with the last SAT redesign, effectively allowing only juniors who took the old SAT to submit their scores.

Thank you all for valuable comments. My DD2022 planning to take her ACT in June or July 2019 and planning to start her preparation and we bought ACT prep guide. She took 1st test before going though material as recommended in book, she got ACT scores Math (36) with 2 wrong, English(35)- with 1 wrong, Reading( 32) with 4 wrong, and Science(32) with 4 wrong. I am really wondering is it worth taking ACT at end of freshmen year at all?

Those are absolutely incredible scores, but just think if she could get a 34C without studying much maybe she can get a 35 or 36 after some more work? If so I would advise her to focus on science and reading since those are her lower scores. But, honestly, she could wait until her Junior year to retake she doesn’t have to take it every year.

@drusba The website doesn’t say what constitutes ‘junior’ year. Do you know if the June test date counts as junior year if Sophomore year comes to completion on June 1st or does it mean anything after the September dates of Junior year after school has begun?

^I do not know if CM considers the June test as a junior test. You should probably contact CMU and ask. In years past, its junior/senior test requirement has apparently not been enforced as an unbreakable rule as some have mentioned being told it will consider earlier tests. The rule also creates a ridiculous dichotomy. CMU requires the applicant to provide all SAT or all ACT scores, asserts it superscores the SAT, but then has the supposed rule that only junior and senior tests are “acceptable.” So what is the actual rule? Must you submit all scores when sophomore or freshman scores are unacceptable, does it really superscore SAT, or does it ignore sophomore and freshman test scores in doing that? CMU has a problem that is too often shown in admissions departments that make up the rules – clarity is not considered when creating rules.

Reg. CMU, my dd applied to SCS with her 10th grade SAT score.(only score) (Somebody in CC pointed out the CMU admissions page that said the scores are considered only if taken during the junior and senior year)
She was admitted to CMU for fall 2019.
