ACT is curved?!

I recently heard something about how the ACT test is curved...I...what?! I have never heard anything of the sort before. If it is curved in some way, how can I used this to my advantage?

Yes, it is curved. Best way to take advantage? Try and get most of the questions right, haha. I'm not sure if there is an advantage because the curve is pretty steep. (usually -1 is about a 35, depending on the level of difficulty on the section).

What I heard was that each student's composite score was somehow curved against the scores of other students. Is that true?

I assume you mean bell curve?
not exactly sure if that's how they do it, it's supposedly pre-determined...

but yea, it varies slightly from practice book curves if that's what you're asking; mostly for the better, sometimes for the worst (if a specific section is easier than others for instance)

If you get all of the questions correct, the curve is irrelevant.

Seriously, forget the curve.

Questoin: What's the best way to do better on a non-curved test?

Answer: Get more questions correct.

Question: What's the best way to do better on a curved test?

Answer: Get more questions correct.

If you're adamant about somehow using the curve to your advantage, you might want to look into various conspiracy theories floating around the internet which speculate that the company that administers the ACT rigs the tests so that those administered in the Fall are harder, causing people to spend money to retake the test in the Spring. I'll admit that I haven't looked into this, but common sense says that if this were the case people would catch on to the discrepancy between the score distributions from different test dates. I doubt that there's any real basis for such theories.

True, and I'm thankfully not desperate enough to be hunting around for conspiracy theories. Thanks for the info, just wanted to clarify exactly how this curve worked.

the only data i would have to support that theory would be that the december science test was harder than any i had ever seen. but it could just as easily be luck of the draw too.
