ACT New Writing

Hey all,

So like a lot of people in CC, I will also be taking the Sept ACT this Saturday. And as you all know, ACT is enhancing their essay portion. While I am familiar with the prompt and the 3 perspectives, I am still unclear whether you are allowed to/should use first person pronouns to express your perspective on the issue. Throughout my English classes, most of my teachers were against incorporating first person pronouns in essays because they supposedly weaken the essay overall. Is this the same with the ACT essay? Or should I use “I”, “me”, “my”, and other first person pronouns or no?

And lastly, are we allowed to make up evidences such as dates and events and such? I know for the SAT you are allowed to but I wasn’t sure if it is the same for the ACT.

Thanks in advance!

You can use first person pronouns.

I think they would find it a little wierd it you said something like Kuwait was invaded the United States in the 1970s and established a communist regime, but for personal examples, they can’t disprove anything.

@Frigidcold Thanks! To clarify, you’re saying that I could say something along the lines of: “I think that …blah blah blah … is detrimental to the society because I think that …blah blah blah…” ?

No. He’s saying you can say, President Obama recently passed a bill banning the use of pesticides in Ohio.

You can’t really disprove it, at least not quickly. And the readers don’t have time to fact check.

Just make your lies believable.

@mmk2015 ok, I understand how to make up somewhat believable facts but I was clarifying about using first person pronouns
