I got a 29 on my December ACT and I want to raise it up to a 32-34 range. I really want to finish all of my standardized testing by June, if possible, but I don't want to put myself at a disadvantage. Should I just get it over with in June or study more and take it in September?

DD got a 29 the first time, raised it to a 31 the second, and also got a 31 the third. Waiting on April’s results now. She has yet to really study for it. So, to answer your question, just the familiarity of it might help boost your score. Why not take it in June and then depending on your score, plan to take it in September and study over the summer.

You are right that it is better to get the standardized tests done by June of Junior year. Do some preparation and take it in June. If you are still not satisfy with the score, take a final test in September after thorough preparation in the summer. Try to limit your standardized test attempt to 3. First, it is unlikely to get further improvement after 3rd attempt. Second, it will not look good for school applications especially those require all scores. You should be able to find out where your current ACT score stands by doing timed practice test instead of taking the real test.

If you really want a better score take it in June then if your score is good you can just keep it, and if it isn’t good you can study up for the next one. I have never studied for the ACT and I still improved my score from a 29 on my first test to a 33 on my second, so it is definitely possible to do better without study, but certainly not a guarantee.
