Should I not take ACT on the June?

I have ACT on the June, and I expect that I will get about 32 in the test. However, I'm sure that I can get 34 or more if I will take ACT on the September after seriously studying it through the summer. The schools of my choice requires about 34 in ACT, so I don't think taking ACT in June is worth doing. Since selective universities want students to take ACT just once or twice, wasting this precious chance in June seems a suicidal act. Do you think I should cancel the test of the June and take my first ACT on the September and the second one on the November or the December?

Don’t take the ACT until you feel absolutely ready or you HAVE to take it. I’d skip the June test and go for September. Colleges don’t want tons of test scores. Just study hard over the summer and you will see your wishes granted.

There is a dilemma. You may get a lower score in June, but at least you will have one score on hand and get the experience. Taking the test twice is not a problem at all as most students take it twice. If you wait till September, you may get a better score as a first attempt. But that may be the only score you can get before EA/ED deadline. What if there is something happened that affect your performance on that test date? Do you want to risk the chance? Second attempt in November or December is fine for RD. However, you would not have much time between September and November/December to prepare for the retake once the school resumed and you started working on the application already. So you probably would not get much improvement in the second attempt. If I were you, I would give the June test a try. Make sure you do at least a few practice tests before the test. Having a score of 32 on hand may get you started to prepare for some safety school applications already in the summer.

I think taking the ACT twice is pretty far from being a suicidal act, regardless of the selectiveness of the school. As billcsho suggested, if you are planning to apply EA to any school having your first score be the only one you’ll have available to send by the 11/1-12-1 deadlines is pretty risky.

OK. I will take ACT on the June, September and (if necessary) October or December. I hope I would do well in the second attempt. Thanks!

My S did better in June than in Sept. He didn’t prepare much so academic material in general was fresher and his mind sharper while he was near the end of the school year than it was after a summer away from school. Just another thought :)
