Got a 36 on all sections except English. I got a 28 on English, so a 34 composite. I usually get a 32-34 in all sections and just had a weird test. I am a junior and this was first time taking it. Should I retake to get higher English score but possibly a lower composite score?

Your English score will certainly raise some questions. Did you perhaps misgrid the test, it happens? If you consistently get 32-34’s in English, then I would say definitely retake. Your composite score should not go down if you can score at least a 32 (you can actually lose two points on the other three sections and still have a 34 composite score). If you can raise your English score to at least a 32, I"d say you have a decent chance at a 35 (32, 35,35,36). If you got a 34, you might even get a 36 (34, 36, 36,36)!

@Austen2, my suggestion is based on my own analysis of a few schools. Per my analysis, many good schools, look at three ACT scores - ACT composite, ACT Math, ACT English (with writing portion - so not just English alone). So, if there is a chance you can improve your English score without reducing your other subject scores, I suggest you take it.

Update: got a composite 35 with a 34 in English!
Most colleges do not superscore the ACT but, for the one’s that do, you have a perfect score, congrats.
