I have a few questions, and I hope you guys can help me out.

How long should I spend reading the passages so that I have enough time to answer all the questions?

Should I do the questions that cite a specific paragraph or certain lines first or last? What about the in-text vocabulary questions?

Please include your ACT Reading score. Thank you!

According to the time restrictions, you have about eight minutes to read a passage and the questions included. You have a total or four passages to tackle in about 35 minutes. Every person reads differently but what I did was read through the passage once and then answered the questions accordingly. I spent as much time as I needed the passage (double checking included) and moved on either early or on the 8 minute mark.

The other route you can take is skimming the questions first then searching for the answers in the passage. Depending on how fast you read, this may be a better option. Either way, I spend less time concerning myself with what types of questions I’m faced with and focusing on where to find them in the passage, working consecutively and skipping where I needed to. But I made sure to spend up to 8 minutes on the passage to feel satisfied with all of my answers.

Best of luck! (BTW, got a 36 on Reading).

Around how long should I shoot for to finish reading the passage?

Personally, I thoroughly read and annotated each passage, then answered the questions. I also went in the order that the passages are presented. I’m a quick reader, so even with annotating, it didn’t take me longer than 2.5 minutes for each passage. My strategy was to answer all questions I could without referring back to the passage, first. I would then go back to the questions I had to refer back to the passage to, and do those. I always made sure to have all questions from a passage completed before moving on to another passage. Going to a different passage before finishing all of the questions only served to harm me, when I would go back to another passage to do the questions that I skipped.

The annotating only works for some people. Only do it if you read quickly, as annotating for a slow reader would end up throwing off your timing. I got a 34 on the Reading section, so take that as you will.

Do you do all the questions in order? Or do you do the specific questions first?

@MuhNickuhhh I think around 3-4 minutes is the ideal time you should spend reading a passage, then use the rest of the minutes during the total 8 minutes spent on each passage answering questions.

How long are the reading passages? I have taken some practice tests that are 100 lines, and others that are barely 80.

I have never taken the ACT so I was wondering about how long they are. It’d be nice if you could give me a general range.
