The science section on the ACT is dragging down my composite. The first time I took the ACT I got a 22 on the science section without studying. The second time I really did practice in between and I only went up one point in this section. I have a 28 composite score, but if it weren't for the science section I could have a 30+ Does anyone have an tips for improving my science score? I have the PR book and the Real ACT book (which I haven't really used yet). I think taking the practice tests will help, but are there any others ways to improve on this specific section? I also need to improve my math score, so if you have any advice to improve on the math section I would appreciate that too, but it's really the science section that kills me.

The science section always kills me on my practice tests too (havent taken real yet). I always get 30+ in the other sections, but cant seem to get science to 30. The practice tests do help tho. I would use the PR book and tests first while saving the "Real ACT" tests for closer to your test date as they are most accurate. The practice tests do help a lot though, not only with science but the others as well. In a few weeks of practice, I went from averaging around 21 Science (28 Comp) to 27 Science (32 Comp). Keep in mind these are only practice tests Im taking, but i think they are pretty indicative of the real thing. So, in short, just practice a lot with the prac tests in "Real ACT", PR, and Kaplan. From what I hear, the tests from those books are most realistic in that respective order. (Tests also get slightly harder in that order) Sorry for the long answer. Hope that helps.

Thankyou, I've kind of been saving the Real ACT book for the same reason but for more practice tests I'll definately consider taking a look at the Kaplan book.

Eh science is just random it's a little bit luck and a little bit actual knowledge. It's mostly luck based on whether or not it's material you've seen before, but it also depends on how good you are at understanding the question and reading the graphs. I got 33+ in every section and 29 and 28 respectively on science the 2 times i took the ACT... I'd say do the practice tests, but if you're focusing on the ACT over the SAT, definitely take it at least 2 times, if not a few more. I've heard scores vary a lot on the science section. Math you can probably study, it's kind of a given pool of information.

I can't say I'm really focusing on one over the other because I have similar scores on both tests (28 and a 1940), but I think my ACT score could improve if I could master the science section and improve the math a little. I have a 30+ on reading and writing and a 26 on the math section, but I'm sure I could improve that. I'm really shooting for a 32 composite, but it won't happen unless I can bring the science up to at least a 27. I think it's the time constraints that kill me.

Yeh, time constraints are tough. On the charts and graphs i rarely read the introduction to the figures, just focus on their captions and info. I find this helps a lot, but then again am no expert at science, typically scoring around a 27 on practice. With plenty of time to study however, i intend to raise mine another point or two and im sure you can raise yours significantly because you are starting out a little lower (where I was a a week or two ago). Sure you can make a run at the 32 and at least come close with practice. I second A1389 in saying that you should take it twice (Sept and Oct) as I already notice that scores fluctuate slightly based on how the passesages catch my attention. Best of luck in September!

I made a 36 on the science section, however I don't think it was because of strats. Actual knowledge of the subject (my science section was predominantely chemistry and physics) saved my ass. For some passages, I just looked at the chemical equations (as opposed to both the equations and the long-ass paragraph) to figure out the questions. My advice, get some serious science knowledge (and I don't mean getting an A in a subject) but really understanding the stuff.

I also got a 36 on the science section. The real trick for me was to go directly to the questions, then to the procedure and lastly to the data tables in order to find the answer. The only issue with the science section is the length of time it takes to think through each question, but for that I suggest practice tests :)

I found science is the most diffcult part. My daughter took ACT twice. She got 33 on English and Math the first time and 34 on english and math the second time. However, she got 29 the first time and 28 the second time on science. I know she did not answer all the science question the first timel (4 problems did not do). But, I could not figure out why the second time the science score went down. I know practice is important. What else can she do besides practice?

I practiced after the first time I took it because my score was so bad in science and math (22 and a 24). My math went up only two points, which I kind of expected, but my science only went up one point! One point if pretty pitiful, so I don't know what to do. I wish I could get some true science knowledge, but I have a limited amount of time. That math I know I can get a 28, but science is going to kill my composite....
