I was wondering if a 31 would good enough for these colleges? They are in the range but I'm not sure if it makes me competitive... and this seems more like ACT Prep question than chance cuz I'm deciding whether to retake the test or not

Brown (ED)

You should retake. Sorry to say, but your SAT and ACT scores are a little low for any of the top schools. Everything else looks good, so study hard and hopefully you will improve. And add some safeties to your list! Good luck!

Are you female, african-american, or very wealthy? If so, you’re set, otherwise, you will need a lot of other things like extracurricular activities, good essay, etc.

Generally those schools need like what, a 32+, and you’re really on the borderline-- you can still make it in though.

I know someone who got into Cornell with a 30, so yes, you have a shot at there. Some of the other are very much out of reach.

And by very wealthy he means can you afford to donate $1,000,000+ to the school. And I don’t think being just female is going to cut it; being a female URM is different though. I have to agree that you should make it if you have great essays, recs, grades, ECs… though. If it is your first time taking it, I would study and retake it to see if you can score higher.

anyone can improve english if they try. it follows pretty basic patterns. try to get that 30+ on it and your composite should go up. reading is less natural to improve so spend more time on english.

I would say to retake the ACT. A 31 would probably get into Northwestern, considering their average is 32, and you’re really close. As far as the other schools on your list, you might need a higher score.

I will go against the grain and say don’t retake the ACT. unless you have the time and energy to study and try to aim for a point or two higher, i wouldn’t bother. there is always the great possibility that your score can drop and that would be worse. those top institutions do accept people with that test scores and that is only a fraction of your application. you need to make sure that you express yourself as more than numbers. so my vote is don’t retake it again, and just do somethign else with your life that is more meaningful!

A 31 is a well-respected score. People on here will definitely tell you to retake because they are the ones getting 32+, but if you look at the stats, all of these schools accept people even in the 20’s. Your ACT score isn’t everything. Colleges are looking for well-rounded students and also a variety of students. They have plenty of kids with high ACT’s, so what about students with great leadership skills and extracurricular dedication. Colleges look at this too. It might be ok to retake, but your ACT isn’t the only thing that will get you into college. A 31 beats a lot of people who will be applying to college. My sister got a 31, she went to a small private school and now is at UIUC as a grad student with full tuition paid and a very large stipend. I’d say she’s doing well with just her 31. Retake it if you want, it would never hurt, but know that a 31 is respectable.

wow great job on math though!
yeah well it wouldn’t hurt to retake, you’re applying to the best colleges in the nation so a 34+ would give you an incredibly competitive edge.

aim for a 36 and you should end up in that range
best of luck!
