ACT Score Question

So here is my situation:

My school made us take the ACT w/out writing. I did really well on this, earning a composite of 35, with an English, Math, and Reading score of 34, and a science score of 36.

Some of the schools I want to apply to (Georgia Tech, maybe Stanford, etc.) want or recommend the essay, so I decided to take the test again with the essay. I just got back my MC scores, and will get my essay scores back in a couple weeks. For now, lets assume I do well on the essay. On the MC, I got a composite of 34, with an English of 29, a Math of 35, a Reading of 34, and a Science of 36.

So my question becomes, can I submit both these scores to colleges that want the essay and not hurt my chances? The 29 I got on the 2nd English freaks me out, and I’m worried that submitting this score might hurt my chances of admission in my more selective colleges. I really don’t want to take the test again, and am just looking for some guidance. Thanks.

If the school requires the ACT with essay then they will not even look at the score with out the essay. Only the essay act will count.

So it then becomes a question of if the second score is good enough for the really selective universities.

That is a tough one. Maybe look for schools that superscore? The best thing to do is to talk to admissions counselors. Somewhere such as Stanford, you do not want a 29 to be submitted.
