I took the ACT with writing
do most colleges look at the composite score
or do they just look at the Combined English/Writing score??

Most look at the composite score. They will also look at your subscores for each section.

They look at all the sub-scores, including the essay score.

To reaffirm what niceday said, I have also heard that most colleges do indeed look mostly at your Composite score, as well as your subscores. In fact, some college websites themselves show you their student statistics according to their ACT composite score.

But do not take me wrong, everything on the ACT test is taken into consideration. However, I believe the composite score is weighed more heavily than with the writing attatched to it.
