how much does the ACT Writing score matter for admission to top colleges. I have a 35 on my ACT, excluding writing. I didn't take the writing in October when I achieved this score though. My last writing was last February, and I got an 8, is that acceptable? Why the hell do they need it?

the writing section is largely disregarded IMO, don’t worry that score is excellent! to hell with writing.

What did you get on the one with writing?

31 composite.

send both scores they’ll pay attention to the 35 one

Most of the schools do not consider the ACT without writing. So check with the school.

It really varies from school to school. Some that require the ACT with writing won’t look at your 35 at all. Others will. Submit both to all your schools that require ACT with writing or require all scores. Submit only the 35 where it’s not necessary to have the ACT with writing.

^ really?? I’d think that if a school received ACT scores, saw a 31 and a 35 (although no writing), they wouldn’t completely disregard it. maybe as long as you send in one act with writing you’ll be fine? I really have no clue though, just my guesses!

Send in both. They’ll look at both but many schools want you to take the Writing exam (at least once).

Actually, not all schools will consider both. Some schools that require the test with writing will not consider sittings where you did not take the writing portion. Some schools automate the review of scores and adcoms do not see the disregarded scores at all. Even so, there is no harm in sending both.
