Acting while not being a Theatre Major

For example, could you be an Art history major and still be able to act in plays and take at least some theatre classes? I know you cannot double major or minor in theatre at UCLA but I am just wondering if the theatre majors are the only ones able to do such activities such as plays.

hey, I was actually wondering this same thing. I looked online a while back, and it might’ve said that there was one play non-majors could be in… I don’t remember clearly enough, but it didn’t seem like there were an abundant amount of opportunities. If I get in and find out that we can’t be a part of the shows, I plan on joining a lot of singing and theatre clubs and some dance classes.
If you minor in theatre though, I’m pretty sure you can audition.

you know at first I thought you could not minor in theatre at UCLA but upon further reading I see you are correct. I am going to look more into it and thanks for this reply too :)))))

Hi!! I’m currently a theater major at UCLA, so I’m pretty familiar with the opportunities on campus :slight_smile:

Shows within the department are theater majors/minors/graduate students only. BUT there are a bunch of student theater groups that put on great shows for everyone! Hooligan Theatre Company does a small-cast musical in the fall, two big musicals in the winter, and a play in the spring. Act III does a combination of plays and musicals throughout the year, there’s a company dedicated to Shakespeare, and you can audition for a million different dance and acapella groups on campus.

As for classes, the majority of courses offered by the department are just for theater students. Some allow non-majors to enroll, but majors and minors are typically given priority. There are, however, some theater GEs explicitly for people outside of the department. I’ve heard they can be really good!

Overall, I would say UCLA is an awesome school for doing theater, no matter what major you are. There are LOTS of opportunities to be in shows, and it’s a really fun community to be a part of :slight_smile:

Hope this helps!

@bruinperson Wow! Thank you so much for the info! UCLA is my top school, and the only thing I was worried about was the possibility of not having many theatre opportunities. Now I want to go there even more! These next twelve days are going to be some of the longest of my life lol X_X

@bruinperson hey is alright if i ask you a few questions through the messages? Just about theatre and what not at UCLA.

@jtverdon Yeah definitely!
