Activities you should try this summer

Hey all! I’m an incoming college freshman who applied to college last year. In reflecting on my high school experiences, I’ve realized that I wish I spent my summers being more productive in terms of extracurriculars. Here are some ideas that I wish I would have known in high school.

I’ll split ideas into categories based on future career/major interests:

Nursing/Medicine:

  1. Volunteer at a hospital/shadow a doctor
  2. Join a clinical research lab
  3. Intern at a public health organization/hospital

Biology/Chemistry/Physics:

  1. Join a basic science research lab at a local university
  2. Take college courses at a local community college
  3. Intern at an biological/chemistry/physics oriented company

Business/Finance/Economics:

  1. Shadow a higher-up of a company
  2. Invest in the stock market/cryptocurrency
  3. Start a personal finance YouTube channel for high schoolers

English/Philosophy/Humanities:

  1. Start a blog or writing website
  2. Take college courses at a local community college
  3. Volunteer/get a job at the local library

Engineering:

  1. Intern at an engineering oriented company
  2. Compete in an engineering competition
  3. Try to make your own device/product

Education:

  1. Babysitting/tutoring younger kids
  2. Become a summer camp counselor
  3. Take college courses at a local community college

Computer science:

  1. Program a website/app for a startup
  2. Learn a new programming language
  3. Participate in competitive programming competitions

Psychology:

  1. Join a psychology research lab
  2. Volunteer/get a job at a local hospital
  3. Take college courses at a local community college

History:

  1. Do a history-related project in your local community
  2. Volunteer/get a job at the local library
  3. Make a history YouTube channel

Environmental science:

  1. Do research on your local environment (river studies, soil studies, etc)
  2. Volunteer/get a job at a local nature center
  3. Intern at a environmental conservation nonprofit

Journalism:

  1. Start your own publication/website!
  2. Intern at a local newspaper/news station
  3. Start an initiative to fight problems in your local area

Visual and Performing Arts:

  1. Start an animation YouTube channel
  2. Make an art portfolio
  3. Get employed/intern at a local art-based organization or nonprofit

Other fields:

  • Volunteer at a related organization
  • Start a YouTube channel about the subject
  • Start a fundraiser to combat an issue related to the subject
  • Intern or get employment at a related organization
