Aside from attending fraternity parties, or going off campus to the Loop, what else does the typical student do for fun? Any free concerts? Does all the socializing happen on Friday and Saturday nights?

Concerts:
Well, you have WILD twice per year, which is free and a ridiculously fun time. I’m sure you’ve heard of WILD by now.
There is also the student group called the Gargoyle, which brings pretty well-knoen indie-rock type bands to campus in the Gargoyle room on campus. I think those shows are once or twice per month?
WUStock is an annual concert festival, smaller than WILD, on the South 40. Matt&Kim came this year.
Oh, don’t forget about the 900 a cappella groups, too.

All those are free.

STL also gets hit on the touring circuit from popular bands. The Pageant is an awesome mid-sized concert venue right on the Loop. Think Bright Eyes, Decemberists, Strokes, Death Cab for the Pageant. There are larger stadiums, like the Blues hockey stadium that has your taylor swifts and coldplay concerts. Of course, these won’t be free, but if you like music, you’ll have more than your fair share of options.

As a freshman you generally tend to stay on campus more for socializing, whether it be concerts or fraternity parties or just hanging out in your dorm with friends (still lots of fun - I think dorm hanging-out kind of defines the college experience for lots of people, especially freshmen and sophomores), and going to the Loop or the CWE seems to be more of a “special occasion” for lunch or shopping or dinner. It seems that once you are a sophomore or junior, you still stay on campus a lot, but going off-campus seems to be more of a regular occurrence.
But, overall, there really is a lot of variety of social events. It’s not like some schools where Frat parties are absolutely the definitive social event for all 4 years, and not like other schools where you don’t feel connected to campus at all and you do everything in a city. There really is so much going on where there’s really no reason to feel bored. If you end up just being alone for a night, it’s probably because you made a conscious effort to study or something.
