ACTs and Columbia

Do you have to submit sat IIs in addition to ACT? different websites say different things.

Are ACTs looked down upon since Columbia is an east coast school?
Im an east coaster myself but I haven't done spectacular on the SATs and am hoping for a better ACT score.

What exactly are your scores? Columbia will accept both but I would try and take the SAT again if you have the time and energy to study for it. I think you still need to submit two SAT Subjects tests now but it's best if you just go to www.columbia.edu and check what they say.

Thanks, I checked the website and SatIIs are required no matter what. From practice tests my ACT score falls within the middle 50% but my SAT does not. Thats why I want to take the ACT.

Ah, well you should keep in mind that most of hte people who are accepted have percentiles of 96 and above. Shoot for the stars!

My D has a good ACT score (w/writing) but never taken SAT yet. Is it better to try SAT this fall(This is a last chance since she is senior.), or just go with ACT? She has 760-800 SAT II scores. Thanks,

It doesn't matter--- if her ACT and SAT II's are sufficiently strong (like a 35 ACT and the SAT II range you stated), don't bother taking SAT's.

I know several students admitted to Columbia, Yale, Harvard on the merits of ACT alone (and for Yale, not even SAT II's). I myself submitted my SAT's first and then my ACT as well. I did similarly on both (2350Sat 35act) so it didn't hurt. PLus, you know that ACT has score choice right? So milk it for all it's worth.

Thanks for your advice. Yes, she knows she can choose the best score on ACT.

No, I disagree.

Even if you don't need the SAT, you should take it anyways. Some scholarships and other great opportunities will only accept SAT scores.

Karot, Could you give me some scholarship names that only accept SAT socres?

There's a huge one. It's called the National Merit Scholarship.

I thought National merit Scholarship only considered PSAT's, which the poster is now too advanced for. Is this wrong?

No in order to become a Finalist/Winner you need to submit your SAT scores (after you meet the PSAT cutoff which varies by state). But no top schools actually award money for NMSQT winners.... =/
