I have an essay that I'm using for most of my other colleges. It's a really serious subject, and I think it's important that Columbia knows this about me. Should I upload it?

Probably not, unless it's crucial to your application. Columbia discourages applicants from sending supplemental materials unless they reveal something extremely important about the applicant.

I think the tone of their app pretty much shows that they don't care for additional info

..but if it's important that they know something about you, include it; however, don't present it as some long, passionate narrative. (I don't know what you mean by "essay") Just give them the facts.

What essay are you submitting for Columbia? If it's better than the additional essay then you have nothing to worry about. If not, use the other essay instead.
