One thing that I think my essay is lacking is my athletics. I have used a really great essay about cross country for all my other schools, but there is no where for it on MIT's app. Can I just put it under: " Completely Optional) No admission application can meet the needs of every individual. If you think additional information or material will give us a more thorough impression of you, please respond below. (Please limit your answer to 1000 words or fewer)"? or is that just for resumes and special circumstances?

The additional information is for whatever you want. I'm assuming the 1000-word limit is for the online application, as the paper application carries no such limit.

I was just wondering: could you send them a big envelope that shows some of the projects and research papers you have done?

Well I already sent in my cello cd and resume, so I hope they don't mind another essay.

If you have participated in athletics, reference it in your activity grid. If you are actually good enough to be recruited, you have to process that vis-a-vis the athletic office. There's no point to write an essay about your participation in a sport unless it "changed" or "inspired" you in some way.

If you have music, you can submit it as supplemental material. However, it won't make a difference unless it is REALLY good.

It is not appropriate to submit 50 pages of research material. Believe it or not, there will be OTHER people applying to MIT when you do, and your application is not the ONLY one that admissions people will have the pleasure to read. I submitted an abstract of my research as an optional response. It was approximately 400 words. I think that it aptly described my research and was appropriately succinct.
