ADHD and ADD natural cures

<p>I hear that the DHA of Omega-3 in Fish Oils helps a lot.</p>

<p>Also L- Theanine and Gaba.
Reduction of sugar.</p>

<p>Anyone have experience with this? I do not want to take Strattera all my life.</p>

<p>^ Yes, it does. I happen to have ADD myself, but due to the fact that I've been taking two spoonfuls of cod liver oil (great DHA source!) a day since the age of 3, I saved myself from some potential difficulties that could have surfaced during my high school career. Try it; it really works. ^_^</p>

<p>In my family, omega 3 helped with mild ADD but it took a month or two. Also mild depression can be helped, but you must take it on a regular basis.</p>

<p>I have ADHD, which wasn't diagnosed until late (I'm a girl and when I was in elementary school they were only diagnosing it in kids who were running around destroying things). One thing that worked REALLY well was cognitive behavioral therapy...it's not even a pill, it's a kind of "process" that you go through with a psychologist. It totally worked for me...I got through HS, unmedicated, with good grades and got into top tier schools! </p>

<p>You can learn to deal with your inability to focus without medications...it's REALLY hard but worth it :-)</p>

<p>look kiddos, i tke ritalin for narcolepsy. i dont think <em>fish oil</em> would keep me awake. it's a broader issue than you like to think.</p>

<p>There's another "fish oil" miracle of sorts in the US News magazine this week featuring the best children's hospitals. It isn't about a mental disorder, but a rare digestive/liver one that they had tried everything for. They let this child use a fish oil product that fell under "compassionate use" because we didn't have enough information on it to have it approved yet. What I like about it is that no matter what form or type, it doesn't have bad side effects.

<p>L-theanine is an amino acid that crosses the blood brain barrier, assisting in uptake of GABA and dopamine into brain cells. Also helps in reducing anxiety, worked more as a mood enhancer for me. There are a bunch of natural herbs like bacopa moneri and withania somnifera that aide better cognitive abilities and improve neurotransmission, without the ‘stimulatory’ effect that i’d get with adderol and ritalin. These taken in combination with GABA was pretty dope. </p>

<p>Not a remedy as such, but a type of pursuit: I have observed a couple of (unrelated) boys with a confirmed ADD/ADHD diagnosis, who took up an unusual sport: fencing. This was on a recommendation from a teacher, as apparently this sport is known to benefit/reduce symptoms, help kids focus, etc. </p>

<p>3 years later, both boys are doing significantly better academically and socially, and are said to be terrific athletes, with quite a few medals to their name - a boost to their self esteem. </p>

<p>before i tried medications, i took Omega-3 and didn’t have any sugary foods/drinks but it barely made any difference. try a different medication if you don’t like straterra.</p>

<p>Gotta love the catchy titles “natural cures” for ADHD…makes one think that if you need to take “medication” there’s got to be something wrong with you because there are other more “natural” ways you can cure yourself. Why not add in some shame to those who have already:
Used just about every “natural” cure from fish oils to herbs to vitamins to supplements, changed their diet, did yoga, meditation, exercised more, swam, ran, stood on their head, cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback and more, all to no avail? Must be something really wrong with me because all these other folks did some of those things and miraculously their ADHD symptoms disappeared!
How about we start getting real here for a moment, shall we? Besides the “sexy” headlines of certain drum beat reporters and other “just want to spread the real truth about over diagnosing and over prescribing of ADHD and medications”, the fact remains that ADHD is very real and here to stay. While some folks may find alternative ways to treat their ADHD, for the overwhelming majority of us, medication is the best course of action. We resent the do-gooders that tell us to just do this, or just try that “because it really works” because we’ve in many cases already done that and it didn’t work. Besides that we’ve spent hundreds of dollars and countless hours/days/weeks of frustration to further add one more failure to the list we’ve had since childhood.
So…the next time you want to “spread the good word” about just use this or do that, remember that there are millions of us who’ve done that and it didn’t work and allow us to have the dignity of using what does work for us, without having to hear from some well intentioned folk and some not so well intentioned others about what we should or shouldn’t be doing with our bodies.</p>
