Adios NYU!

Here's a thread for anyone who can't afford NYU. Vent your frustrations!

Adios NYU. I've been acquainted with you since Felicity, where you were called the University of New York. I've thought about coming to your gates, eager, young, ready to grasp life by the horns and enjoy the ride. But now, that dream has been crushed at your ridiculous suggestion that I take out 16,000 in loans each semester. Now, I will go to experience the typical American college life as I venture out to Madison, WI, putting on a beer funnel hat thing and totally "****in partying" with a lot of drunk douche bags. Who knows, maybe I'll come to you for grad school. You or Columbia, that is. I only hope that in the next 4 years that I'm in college, LA or some other city can become America's next hotspot, and NY will regain some of its original flavor, and then I'll come to you. Good bye NYU and good luck to all CCers who are attending NYU!

This school actually suggested I take out 53,000 in PLUS loans per years, and gave me no money. My parents are now actually considering Fordham, because chances are they'll give me more money. Good luck to all CC who were lucky enough to get money from this school, or to the rich kids who can pay full tuition next year!

nyu suggested that my parents take out 25,000 in PLUS loans per year...not going to happen.

dude I wish for 25,000, they suggested like 53,000 for me. My parents can probably pay about 25,000 a year without loans/aid so I wish...

They're asking $22k in PLUS loans on my end. Not quite as bad as some of you, but still unfeasible on my end. I was quite angry to come home to this, though I should have been expecting it. I've really gotten into NYU. Now I have to leave the NYU Facebook network :(.

the 25,000 isn't that bad, but it's still a bit much. ^ looks like i'm going to have to leave the network too. lol

They suggested that I take out nearly $30,000 in PLUS loans- on top of the other $6,000 in loans included in my aid package. My EFC is less than $10,000!

I am bummed, especially because I got into the Baird Urban Scholars program. Funny how it works out- they'll do anything else to get me to attend, but the one thing I really need isn't gonna happen. Oh, well, their loss.

Yeah, the amount they gave is ridiculous :/

Haha, so out of curiosity, where is everyone looking as a financially sound substitute?

Michigan and McGill for me --and if by some miracle I get into any of the four schools I've yet to hear from.

Ahh!!! This is such a rip off!

I got into the BA/DDS combined program - thats great!
I got 4400 a year in CAS scholarships - thats low, but its better than nothing.
I was asked to take out 43,000 in Loans a year?! - this sucks.

I'm feeling really awkward about my stance towards NYU. I got no merit scholarships at all, though I guess I had it coming with a 1390/2130 and a once-3.81 GPA (it's lowered, if they actually take into account first quarter grades).

My EFC is about 52,000, but honestly my parents make (combined) 60k a year. We own quite a bit of property that gives us rent (enough to raise my efc to 52k), but my whole childhood I didn't feel like we were destitute, but we didn't have that kind of money to spend. I hear it's very hard to get scholarships when you're not a first-year student, I don't really know, I want to study journalism and my parents want me to go to nyu, yet I could do alot of useful stuff with that kind of money. I didn't get a full-ride to Rutgers, either, naturally.

I'm going to UW Madison, which is a really good public school and I'm proud to go there. But Madison is no New York City.

OP: just because you MIGHT go to UW-M doesn't mean you are going to be xxxxING drunk all the time. Since you were smart enough to get into NYU, use that big brain and don't drink your college years away.

So, you can't pay for NYU - neither can most of the kids who applied. It is a fiction that private colleges are "affordable." Of course they aren't for the vast majority. But, be happy where you are planted and your life will be SO much better.

OK, this mean mother will depart now.

Fencemother, be nice. This thread is for venting their frustration. Especially, when NYU had random type of admission selection this year. These kids worked hard and now they want to blow steam. Some of these kids had super stats and were smart enough to get in. I sense some rudeness on your part.

The University of South Carolina is my financial safety, and most likely where i'll end up depending on whether i get accepted to Vanderbilt.

fencersmother, that was more than a little bit rude. We all know that private college aren't affordable for all. No offense, but we're all kids (I assume your a mom by your username) who have worked really hard for the last few years to get into the college of our dreams. We can't afford full tuition, so we all applied for financial aid, and now we're not even getting that.

No it was not, read on to see why I think so

That is actually not true. There are plenty of private colleges who commit to meet the full demonstrated need of each and every student. For students with EFC<10k, attending the local state school will cost exactly the same as attending a private school that commits to meeting full demonstrated need.

I listened to NYU's FA spiel at least three times, and each and every time they were very upfront and stated point blank that "unfortunately we cannot commit to meeting the full demonstrated need of every student" From that point on, it is "buyer beware". There are plenty of EFC calculators available, so everyone should have known what their potential exposure is, and not b*tch when NYU did what they said they will probably do.

If NYU had reneged on a commitment to meet full demonstrated need I would agree with you. However, this is not the case. In a sense, applying to college is similar to shopping for a house. Never ever look at a house you cannot afford for the sake of "dreaming", because every realistic possibility will then look not quite as attractive. As I said, NYU is very upfront about what they can and cannot do. If you hoped for the impossible, and then hopes met reality, perhaps NYU is not to blame?

I apologize for being a bit harsh (though not rude), but I guess someone has to be Simon Cowles around here, and say it like it is. FA is not an entitlement, though people tend to treat it like one. I am all for removing ALL economic obstacles to education, but if this will jeopardize the education of many for the benefit of a few then I am sorry but I have to agree with NYU. There are hundreds of other schools that will provide just as good an education, so if education is your goal and not spending 4 years in NYC, then you have plenty of other options.

There was a reason that this thread was meant for "venting" you know...

Groovygreek, no need to apologize, you weren't being harsh, I just don't think you get the point of my post.
I didn't say I expect NYU would give me full tuition. My point was that the OP was clearly disappointed and trying to vent his frustration, like all of the other kids on this thread who have wanted NYU for so long. Then this random mother comes on a thread for kids who are venting frustrations, and basically says to suck it up? How about a little understanding - I mean, personally, I didn't expect to get a lot of money, but the other 5 schools that have accepted me have given me around the same amount based on my parents income, so I kind of was hoping for a little bit from NYU.
And when I said that we know private colleges aren't affordable for all, that was a response to fencersmothers saying that it is a myth private colleges are affordable.

I have no sense of entitlement, just was hoping for a little money because my parents don't have around $200,000 lying around, and taking out 100,000 in loans is just ridiculous. Just let people vent their frustrations; we all have backup financial safeties - for me, it's Binghamton, and other schools that have been more generous with their FA.

Oh jeez I guess I am lucky!!!
I got 26k in scholarships and grants!!
And 25k in loans - PLUS, stafford, etc. But my dad can pay 25k a year - so I'll be like on half-tuition. Cool...

NYU looks really bad in FA.
