ok so i was thinking of applying for admission by exception to a uc because of my past.
i have a weighted 2.6 gpa and well like here are my reasons:
i live in a small home with 8 people
i dont have my own room ( i dont even have a bed! >.<)
one working parent
first american generation
depression my junior year
parents are immigrants
sat scores: 1430 :(
act: 22 (im studying to get it to a 28)
if i dont do that im going to study my *** of for admission by examination
thank you for the help ^.^

oh and im GOING to get 650 on both my subject :D

but generally, admission due to extenuating family circumstances requires you to be at least close to the range of “normal” circumstances-- you are honestly a bit low. also, i can claim everything you have except having eight people in my household and not having my own bed, (though after katrina, i didnt have my own bed for awhile) but my grades and scores are much higher.

i believe if you get that 28, write a good essay, and make a good showing this semester for grades you have a good shot at some of the UC’s.

What’s your back up plan? Hopefully you’re not pining away solely on the UC effort. Speak with your school’s guidance counselor and have good options – academically and financially. As others have said, your scores and GPA are a big hurdle. Nonetheless, good luck to you.

The great thing about the CA system is that everyone has a second chance at UCs by attending a CC for 2 years. It would be surprising if the UCs read through stories (many have sad ones) and made many exceptions when they know that route is open to all.

If I were going to try it with any UC it would be Merced. SC has become so popular I’m seeing lots of 4.0s rejected.

Admission by testing alone requires some pretty high scores (an average of 670, if I recall).

Admission by Exception is used for home schoolers, recruited athletes and scions of world leaders. Unfortunately, your story (immigrant and very low income) is all too common in California. Thus, your chances are close to nil. Suggest you focus on a community college, boost your gpa and transfer.

well yea that’s why im going to bust my ass studying and do practice tests. i think i can do it and of course i have back up plans,
thanks for the honest advice
