I am applying to UMich from South Florida with the following stats:
GPA- 3.70(unweighted)…4.6(weighted)
ACT- 28
15 AP Classes…most other classes are honors
Extracurriculars- founder of a charity that has raised 200,000 dollars, incubating new business
( student aid website), NHS, National Business Honors Society, 2 year international Deca champion 3 year state winner, Vice President of JSA club, 110 community service hours.
I really love UMich it is definitely my top choice! Please let me know what you think my chances are!
I think you have a strong chance given your gpa course load and extracurriculars. The only problem I see is your act is a little low but I think they can overlook that, especially because you are a legacy, good luck!
Your weighted GPA is fantastic! If I was to take a WAG at this, I’d say you have a greater than 90% chance of getting in. Standardized test scores are so meaningless to be honest. Which program are you applying to? Mine is school of engineering.
thanks! I am applying to LSA. I was worried because it seems like I am below a lot of the admissions requirements. Applying to LSA should make it a bit easier to get into than the other programs…right?
Can you retake your ACT/SAT to boost up the scores? I guess if you’re applying early action then it’s too late. My weighted GPA is only 4.2 with about 12 AP classes, but unfortunately a couple of my AP classes were taken in middle school. Hurts my GPA a little. Just hope I make it past the initial smell test
As someone mentioned in another thread, these standardized test scores are based on accepted students, which tend to be raised due to vies bound applicants. I doubt that the statistics for the actual entering class would be so high. Although a 28 seems a little low based on the published stats, but realistically I think it’s probably right in the range of those students who chose to attend UMich.
I would agree with @tigerbookmark if you were a Michigan resident. But the admission stats include both, and the in state admissions seem to include lower #s, which skew the average downward. For OOS, the #s are higher. If you were at a 30, I’d give you better odds.
Better than giving you odds, look in the UMich forum, under class of 2019 Admission Results. Get a feel for the stats for OOS kids admitted.
I don’t know how much legacy helps, I’m sorry. I’m not familiar w that. Hopefully some to give you a boost!!
@tigerbookmark@HRSMom unfortunately I can not retake the ACT. I am expecting to be defered I just hope to get in off of deferal. I don’t think it makes a difference but supersocre ACT is a 29. Thanks for your input!
Both your ACT and GPA are below the avg undergrad. Your extracurriculars seem fantastic as well as your workload.I However, I hope I don’t come as harsh when I say this, but my guess is that the admission committee will take a close look at your school, considering you took such a hard workload with a good (enough) GPA and still score below the avg UMIch student’s ACT score. In my opinion, it’s in your best option to take it again.
With that being said, I’ve seen classmates get in with stats around yours. The thing is though they were in-state students, so I can’t say how being OOS will affect you.
