Admission Decisions

Do you think that if your child visits/interviews in the Fall and the application was submitted with scores, recs, essays etc. in December that they already have evaluated your child’s application and made a decision or do you think they wait until the deadline to begin meetings about admission deciisons?

We were told by several schools that they don’t even start reviewing packets until after the deadline…DA, PA, Milton, MX and Groton specifically told us that…I can’t speak for other schools but would gather most practice similar processes.

They wait until the deadline and then some ( some gave an extra 10 days) then they review. If they started early they would not be able to compare all applicants ( for example two soccer players), or five kids from Montreal, etc. The AO at one school specifically said they said after the date has passed. Before that they are consolidating the paper/electronic trail.

Nope, I think admission committees do not start until after the deadline.

So how does it actually work? Interviewer makes notes, then passes it on? How many are on a committee usually?

My understanding is exactly that. Those that interviewed, toured etc make notes…then they have meetings with the AC to talk about yesses and nos…what holes need filling, etc. then they whittle it all down until they have the numbers they need. Interviewers are part of the AC.

Have no idea how accurate this is today, but here’s some insight from an old thread: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-cafe/1085716-andover-describes-admissions-process.html#latest.

Thank you, @CaliPops that was an interesting read! I doubt things have really changed too much actually!

We got completed everything except the application, DD got an email telling her “The school will start to review the completed application…” even 10 days before the deadline. I think this might be a kind of screening. However, I asked DD to review her essay, though.

On the Phillips Academy Andover YouTube channel, there is a video titled: 'Twas the Night Before. In this video, it says that the Andover admissions committee begins to review applications beginning on January 20th, though their final deadline is February 1st, and because of this they suggest that applicants do submit their applications as early as possible.

My guess is that the admissions committee at Andover just starts to read applications earlier as they have such a large pool of applicants and need to start earlier than the deadline to ensure that they reach a decision before M10, but allow applicants to submit up until that time to allow for more leniency for the applicants.

^i can see how that may make sense as their applican pool is so large & continues to grow, but we were told last year this was not the case by PA…hmmmm

According to the PA instagram, files are currently being read

Sorry, I’m new to CC. Does PA stand for Phillips Andover?

^yes!

Thanks, buuzn!
