Admission factors

I went to collegeboard (evil) and looked up brown university and they listed, for “VERY important” factors:

Character/Personal Qualities
Secondary School Record
Talent/Ability

So i was wondering, if the essays and recs are only in the “important” category, then how would they know about the character/personalities and talents/ability? If I am especially interested in the bio field and received awards from my bio teachers for dedication, spark for the subject, curious, always putting in lots of effort…would that be a character/personality? yeah, i am pretty sure I will apply this fall maybe ED so Im also wondering what are the typical students that are accepted? are grades everything? or if u have a great essay, recs, passion for a specific subject that can be a big advantage? :)

Well obviously if they're important, they'll read them and learn about your character and poersonality.

No matter what, your high school courses and grades are going to be the most important. Regardless of your character you need to prove to them that you're not going to just fail out.

Just show that you love the school and that you're a passionate person. You really can't do anything more with your grades or scores; however, you can make them see you as a person and not just as grades and scores.

for brown, known for being BIG on personality, can a fantastic essay and recs make up for some avg scores?

Sure. I only had a 1430 SAT I.

Pete. Come on now.

That score hardly merits a "making up for."

Yeah, that's above their average, so it woul dnever count against you as far as I know

as far as i know your application is read by human people not droids and what Brown admission officers put down in a survey for College Board really doesnt affect your admission one way or another. This said if you are a complete prick and they find out, you wont get in. The higher your grades/sats are the better... This combined with the fact that 15% get and the randomness of the college admission makes the disucssion moot.

If the admission officers like you enough, you'll get in

So generally...would i be able to get in (I know you can't say for sure but you know what I mean...does this work/make sense?)...ok grades, great extracurriculars, great essays, good sat scores...

which gives you a....10% chance, just like everyone else! congratulations!

What do you mean by "Great ECs?" I think it's probably how you portray those ECs and how you use them to your advantage rather than just you doing them. If you look on these boards alone, tons of people with great ECs get rejected. The application is all about selling yourself and putting forth a very favorable representation of yourself. Of course it all has to be true, but you definitely have to really put your best foot forward and emphasize all the right things at selective colleges.

my essay wasnt about my curricular activities... and intstead of an essay, i justlisted them since i didnt know what to do... so... i wonder how they knew i was passionate about them...i cant fully remember the whole app though, was there some other section?

hmm... i really, really, REALLY want to get into brown! i have 2400 new SATs, 240 PSAT (national finalist) and idk... i want to do the early program cuz i'm a sophomore in senior year!!! GRR, RAWR, i NEED to get into brown--early!!

confusedaboutcollegegirl,
seriously, a 2400 on the new SATs? you're crazy!

confusedgirl--does that mean you're applying in 2007? I don't wanna apply ED with a 2400! haha, of course there will be a few. Congratulations on that insane score
