Admission for international students: SAT and academic requirements

Hi, I'm an international student intending to study a B.A in Anthropology at McGill University. I'll start studying at Douglas college (New Westminster, B.C), I'm going to study the first year in winter 2012 there (I would begin my studies at Mcgill in 2013). I want to transfer credits to McGill but I don't know if I have to take the SAT test for being admitted (I came across with forums where international students applying to mcgill talk about taking the SAT) . I'm from south america, I'm already improving my english with purpose of succeed in university. I know that I need a high score in TOEFl (because of the information at mcGill's web) and Colombia's bachillerato credential (Colombia's high school), that's not really a problem, but I got a score of 80% approved in last year (if the highest score is A, I scored B+ in all subjects) and in previous years I didn't stand out good enough (I mean, I did fine, I'd say that I got similar scores that in the last high school years but I got more A's). My questions are:

I'm Colombian, do I need to take the SAT?

Are my high school scores high enough for McGill?

Is it more difficult to be admitted in McGill than in University of Toronto or UBC?

is transfering credits to mcgill too difficult?

are the waitlist to be admitted too long?

finally, do I have any chance to study at McGill?, by the way, should I consider U of T or UBC before than Mcgill? I've heard that anthropology departments in these universities are excelent.

Thanks for reading and answering...

please, help me, at least tell me if I have more chaces at U of T or UBC, thanks…

I’m not sure about this one check the McGill website.

I applied from Ontario and based on my knowledge, your highschool marks aren’t good enough. You basically need at least an 85% average to get in to McGill arts.

Yes it is more difficult to get into McGill compared to U of T and UBC. McGill has higher cut off grades and compared to U of T its a smaller school.

Again I don’t know, check the website

Don’t know this one either. Check around the forum.

Yes you may have a chance. Your marks aren’t too far off from the cutoff. However, I think that it would be easier to get accepted to u of t if that’s your concern. U of T has an excellent humanities program and is situated in downtown Toronto so it’s really urban and such. A lot of great resources around U of T like the ROM and tons of libraries.

Hope I helped a bit. Good luck!

I’ve been reading in forums that the SAT would help me and McGill would be interested in my application, I mean, if I achieve a score of 680 or 700 in each section of the SAT, somehow, McGill would admit me?.

I like UBC and U of T but I prefer the life style at Montreal, the colombian community in that city is big and the faculty of arts at McGill really attracts me (I find it very interesting, it reminds me of Stanford or an Ivy league university) and I would have a chance of learning French.

I’ve heard more about McGill that UBC or U of T, I’ve been reading rankings and reviews, and in some ones Mcgill is better than UBC and U of T and in other ones U of T and UBC are better than McGill. In the real life I don’t know what the people think about this. I’m kinda confused.

another question, does McGill look at all the High school marks or just the marks of the last 2 years?

Thanks.

I don’t go to McGill and I don’t know anything for certain, but based off of my knowledge of most other large North American colleges, it will probably check your overall grade from high school. Smaller schools would likely concentrate on your last two years of high school, but McGill is looking at thousands upon thousands of applications, and they tend to not be so thorough in looking at students’ resumes. Also, if you plan on getting a 680 or 700 on every section of the SAT, STUDY HARD, because that is a very difficult feat…some of the grammar rules that they test one on are quite hard and can even stump people like me who are very grammar conscious. Regardless, I hope you get in! Good luck!

oh , thanks for the advice, currently, I’m studying english grammar and roots (since english is not my mother tongue). I’ve been practicing the SAT too. besides the writing test, the other ones aren’t too hard (I’d think), I’ve been studying a lot (here in Colombia there are similar tests). I have plenty of time to get ready for that test. I’m studying almost 10 hours at day in several subjects too (chemistry, physics and maths) but with a special focus on english

I’m Venezuelan (but went to a Canadian high school) and submitted my SAT scores because I applied to the states, I know a lot of ppl who took the SAT’s but didn’t submit. Submitting the SAT scores cannot harm you unless you got like 1400.

It really depends, I have a friend who was in a French school and had a 12/20 average and got into Civil Engineering (Canadian 88%)

I’d like to say it is more difficult but I got into McGill Mechanical Engineering but got waitlisted by UBC Engineering (got in yesterday lol)

Not at all, they’re giving me credits for AP

Took them a month to give me an answer, faster than a lot of schools out there

Yes you have chances and I, as someone who will be attending McGill, would chose McGill over UBC and U of T. Then again I’m biased…

Best of luck.

Oh, I misread #1, I think you don’t have to because you’re not American, but if you have the opportunity take them and if you get, say, 2080, submit submit submit. They’ll be like ‘omg this person’s ESL and did awesome at the SAT, they must be awesome’

¡Gracias amigo!

those experiences are helpful…I’ve been looking in forums some advice and it’s tough to get answers.

I’m studying harder everyday, I know it’s tough but it will be worth.

Viva America Latina…

Hi,
