Which school is harder to get accepted to? Or is it like comparing apples and oranges? DD got into CP and is now waiting on SDSU. Any thoughts?

According to Common Data Set’s data of freshmen class enroll in 2009, CalPoly has SAT CR 530~630, Math 570~670, average GPA 3.81. While SDSU has 450~570, 460~600, and 3.47 respectively. So generally speaking, it’s much harder to get into CalPoly

More so than a lot of other schools, SLO’s admission difficulty is dependent upon major/college. One of my daughters got admitted to animal science a few years ago with a 3.3 weighted GPA and a 1220 SAT (reading/math), and work experience related to major, no leadership. The other daughter got rejected from Kinesiology with a 3.85 weighted GPA and a 1370 SAT (reading/math), work experience related to the major, leadership. Kinesiology only accepts a small number of students each year. In comparison, the ag college is wide open. Business and engineering are also much more difficult to get into. A friend of my oldest daughter wanted to go to SLO more than life itself and wanted to major in business, but her grades were borderline. So she applied for the Ag Business major in the college of agriculture. She’s very happy as a SLO graduate and is working in business that is absolutely not agriculturally based, but I would not recommend this path to everyone. It’s difficult to change majors at SLO not to mention colleges, so be sure to apply for a major you can stick with all four years and don’t assume you can be the exception.

Anyway, here is a link and if you scroll you can find the average GPA/SAT for admitted students to each of the colleges:

Oh, p.s. to maggie: On the face of it it’s easy to say that if your daughter got accepted to SLO then she’s a shoe in for SDSU, however if she applied for a major/college with lower data sets at SLO and to something like engineering at SDSU then it kind of levels the playing field. Also, SLO really does take that work experience related to the field into account, and especially so in the College of Ag, so it can skew individual results.

SLO is harder to get into than SDSU.

What are your D’s stats?

Is SDSU your D’s first choice?

She is really considering both- her #1 choice is a private but i don’t think we can swing it financially. She will not qualify any kind of aid ( merit or financial )I am afraid. She liked SDSU and kinda liked Cal Poly but she now has to think of them as realistic options.

Ah…

Is she more of a warm weather person or cool weather person?

What is her likely major?

Do you live closer to one than the other? How often will she want to come home (kids often underestimate this… )?

Will she want to join a sorority?

JMO…but I think SLO is a bit more prestigious.

What private was she liking? I’m asking in case one of the publics is more like it than the other.

She chose Modern Languages and Literature at CP SOL - Spanish at SDSU
The private she likes in is So. Cal but there is no way we can afford it since my husband is out of work. We also have another kid in college. She is planning on rushing if not just for the experience of meeting other people. A lot of kids from her HS go to SLO so she thinks it will be a continuation of HS which she is not to crazy about.

Ahh…

Well, SLO is big enough (about 20,000 students) that it couldn’t be a continuation of high school…so that’s the good news. LOL

But, if she thinks that she wants to rather certain that she won’t run into any (or many) former HS classmates in college then SDSU would probably be better.

As for USC…Has she been accepted to USC yet? Are her stats high enough for merit aid?

BTW…weren’t you the one who asked about merit aid earlier? Were you the one who posted that your D had been accepted to her top school but had not rec’d merit even tho others with lower stats did? Was this for USC???

No it wasn’t USC

I feel like I am in the same situation. I have been accepted to cal poly for business administration and applied to sdsu for the same major but have not been accepted yet.

I feel cal poly is a little more prestigious than sdsu but am not sure if I want to go there. I live 30 minutes from slo so I sort of want to get farther away since it seems like cal poly is a continuation of my high school also.

Good luck with your decision
