When applying to NYU, are we applying for a particular major or just general admission into the college we desire?
And does having experience related to your desired major increases your chances? (Or offset a lacking portion of your application)
Thanks

Well, it depends which college you're talking about. I believe that CAS is the only NYU college for which you can indicate "undecided", for your major. For the others, you will obviously know what you're applying to study, e.g., drama, dance, film at Tisch; music, education at Steinhardt; business at Stern; etc.

Any increased chances for having experience will, again, depend on what you want to study. Obviously, having experience for something like drama will be essential; same with music; business experience may be helpful at Stern but it's doubtful that it would offset any true 'lacking' elsewhere in the application.

What is it you want to study?

No, I think you can have "Undecided" as a major at Stern too (and possibly at some of the other schools too), although for those, you obviously need to know what field you want to be in (you wouldn't apply to business school without knowing if you want to do business, for example). Not sure... can someone confirm/deny this? They tell you to apply undecided at CAS if you really have no idea whatsoever what you want to do, since CAS offers the most majors.

And no, lack of experience probably doesn't hurt much, if at all. I didn't have anything having to do with business during high school, and I got into Stern. :)

I was considering going for Biology(CAS). Having worked at a local lab for the past two years... it seemed like something I could pursue a career in. But I am still undecided.

Judging from what I've heard from people on Facebook, you can go into CAS "undecided", but apart from that you would have declared a major when you applied to a different NYU school.
